Nature and landscape
In La Orotava, historic paths, Canarian craftsmanship and the volcanic landscape of Teide come together. More than 70 percent of Teide National Park lies within the municipality of La Orotava. Teide National Park on Tenerife encompasses the stratovolcano Teide-Pico Viejo, which reaches a height of 3,718 metres. Atmospheric conditions create an impressive, constantly changing cloudscape there. La Orotava is also home to the institutional headquarters as well as the visitor and interpretation centre of Teide National Park.
The landscape also includes Playa del Bollullo. The beach with black volcanic sand lies below a cliff; strong surf usually prevails there throughout the year. Playa del Bollullo is served by the interurban bus service on route 376 and has a small car park with fewer than 50 spaces.
Culture and history
The official tour of La Orotava’s historic centre includes a stop at the Iglesia de la Concepción with the Museo de Arte Sacro, which has seven exhibition rooms. The Camino del Ciprés is a traditional paved path in La Orotava. On 16 September 2008, the Canarian government recognised it by decree as a cultural asset in the category of Historic Site; it also possesses exceptional ethnographic and historical value.
Also located in La Orotava on the island of Tenerife is the Casa de los Balcones, also known as Casa Fonseca. Built in 1715, the house has carved wooden balconies and an interior wooden patio. Casa de los Balcones provides access to a museum and includes a significant craft complex for traditional Canarian calados, as well as a centre for training, promoting and teaching typical handicrafts.
Festivals and handicrafts
Traditional calados and embroidery are among the handicrafts of La Orotava that attract particular attention from visitors. They are made using very old methods and traditional rules. The Corpus Christi festival is one of La Orotava’s patron saint celebrations; a procession with altars on the façades of the most important manor houses was already established there in 1576. The Corpus Christi procession follows a carpet-covered area of around 1,200 square metres and includes 34 flower carpets as well as a large carpet made of volcanic sand in the town hall square.
Today’s Romería dates back to a format adopted in 1936 and includes decorated carts, horses, folklore groups, musicians and singers.
