Aguamansa in Tenerife: Hiking Trails, Pajares and Cuisine

Nature and Elevation

Aguamansa lies at an altitude of around 1,000 metres above Pinolere and below Los Órganos, on a north-facing slope of Tenerife. The area is connected with spring water and historic tunnels such as El Velo and El Moral.

Hiking Trails

The Camino a Candelaria is an old pilgrimage route connecting Aguamansa with Candelaria. It begins at the Aguamansa fish farm at an altitude of 1,000 metres; it then leads through extensive pine forests and over lava slopes up to the Mirador de La Crucita on the TF-24 road.

The PR-TF 35 circular hiking trail is 5.7 kilometres long, runs through the Parque Natural de la Corona Forestal and can be walked without a permit. As the PR-TF 35 La Caldera–Mamio–La Caldera circular route, it passes the Centro Ambiental de Aguamansa and then returns through the forest to the La Caldera recreation area.

The SL-TF 81 Camino la Orilla del Monte hiking trail climbs to the Mirador Lomo Chillero after approximately 1.5 kilometres. The section of the GR 131 Anaga–Chasna between the La Caldera recreation area and El Portillo begins at the La Caldera car park and meets the SL-TF 81 Camino de La Orilla del Monte hiking trail.

Recreation and Orientation

Behind Aguamansa lies the La Caldera recreation area with car parks, public toilets, picnic tables, a bar-restaurant, barbecue facilities, a playground and a camping area.

Other places in Tenerife include La Perdoma and La Florida.

Culture and Historic Sites

Aguamansa has a significant concentration of traditional Pajares, some scattered and others arranged in groups.

The Autoguía Los Pajares de La Orotava describes a route connecting Aguamansa and Pinolere, where Pajares, landscapes and elements of ethnographic interest can be seen. The municipal Autoguía Los Pajares provides information on the history, maps, stops and audio guidance at each station along the route.

The Los Pajares route begins at the Pajares de Aguamansa and ends at the Museo Etnográfico de Pinolere.

The Casa del Agua is a historic stone building that formerly collected and subsequently distributed water from various springs in the Aguamansa area. It is a junction of the Camino Natural de Anaga–Chasna, the GR 131, the PR-TF 35, PR-TF 35.1 and PR-TF 35.2 hiking trails, as well as the Ruta del Agua.

Products and Cuisine

Aguamansa is associated with papas bonitas, oregano, chestnuts, Reinette apples and occasionally plums. Aguamansa cuisine is associated with rabbit in salmorejo, goat meat and goat cheese.
