La Florida – Trails, Vineyard Terraces and Fiestas

Trails and Landscape
La Florida-Pino Alto lies at the foot of the protected landscape of La Resbala. The Los Gómez section passes through an agricultural landscape characterized by vineyard terraces. La Florida is also located at the foot of the Ladera de Santa Úrsula, a large steep slope east of the Valle de La Orotava.
History and Culture
The Charca de Ascanio is a historic reservoir and the only dam on Tenerife located outside a watercourse. Construction work began in mid-1914; the facility was promoted by the Ascanio brothers to supply the banana plantations in the lower Valle de La Orotava with irrigation water. The Iglesia de La Florida was inaugurated in 2013, after almost two decades had passed since construction began. La Florida preserves traditions such as Canarian wrestling, the ribbon dance, the Tango de La Florida and the Canarian ball game.
In the Maestre Juan area, historic stone walls of terraced fields have been preserved; they made cultivation possible on sloping terrain. The architectural ensemble of Maestre Juan includes one of the best-preserved threshing floors in La Orotava. The name of the Hacienda de Maestre Juan, after which the area is also named, appears in historical documents dating from the end of the 16th century.
Festivals and Agricultural Culture
The Fiestas de La Florida in honor of San Antonio Abad and Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza were recognized as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Canarias in 2018. The annual fiestas in honor of San Antonio Abad and the Virgen de La Esperanza take place in La Florida during the last week of January. The Feria de Ganado La Florida has been held since 1970 as part of the celebrations in honor of San Antonio Abad and the Virgen de La Esperanza; as part of the neighborhood festivities, it takes place on the last Saturday in January. The Bajada del cisco, pinocho y leña was reenacted as part of the Fiestas de La Florida. The Puchero de La Florida has been held for more than 50 years as part of the celebrations in honor of San Antonio Abad and the Virgen de La Esperanza.
The Cordón Trenzado is the most widespread vine-training system in the Valle de La Orotava as well as in La Florida. In this traditional agricultural landscape, potatoes continue to be regarded as the most highly valued gastronomic product.

Nature
The historic Vereda Lomo La Peña trail connects La Florida with Cruz de La Lajita. The Vereda Lomo La Peña runs for 2.28 km from El Horno to Cruz de La Lajita and is considered a difficult route with an average duration of around three hours. Cruz de La Lajita is located on the summit of the Ladera de Santa Úrsula. People with ties to La Florida preserve and decorate Cruz de La Lajita every year.
