Fañabé between beach, culture and history

Morro Grueso gives Fañabé a clearly tangible historical feature: the archaeological zone has the status of a Bien de Interés Cultural. It is located near Fañabé on a rocky interfluve between the Barranco del Agua and the Barranco de Fañabé. Morro Grueso includes a rock art site with approximately 18 engraved panels.

Culture and history

Fañabé is also home to the Cruz de Morro Grueso; it was erected on the summit of the mountain by missionaries in 1961. Today’s centre of Fañabé was established around the 1950s as a workers’ settlement. The land associated with this settlement was initially used for growing tomatoes and later for growing bananas.

The present-day Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Campo was blessed and inaugurated on 15 September 2002. It has a carillon with six bells. Fañabé’s new chapel was completed and inaugurated in 1961. Fañabé’s local festival commemorates Nuestra Señora la Virgen del Campo. During Fañabé’s celebrations, activities take place between the sports pavilion and the square.
