The Church of Virgen del Pilar in La Mola was completed in 1784, after the inhabitants of La Mola had demanded its construction since 1760.
Culture and History
The Church of Virgen del Pilar on Formentera is considered the only church with a porch protecting its entrance. In 1996, it was classified as a cultural asset of particular interest in the “historic complex” category.
The Faro de la Mola stands on a cliff 120 metres above sea level and offers views of the Mediterranean. It is one of the few examples of architecture and civil engineering from the second half of the 19th century on Formentera; the Consell de Formentera ensures its protection and preservation.
A grain mill on Formentera is one of the three oldest on the island and is considered the best-preserved of the seven mills that once existed there. It dates from 1778 and retains its complete internal mechanism.
The La Mola craft market takes place from May to October every Wednesday and Sunday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Island artisans present their creations there. The offerings include traditional crafts such as baskets, espadrilles, jewellery and textiles, as well as contemporary works in glass, ceramics and painting.
In the fields outside the town, grapevines are the most important crop; the grapes are used to produce typical wines of the region.
Paths and Landscape
The El Pilar de La Mola–Es Monestir route is 2.7 km long. On foot, it takes about 45 minutes; by bicycle, 15 minutes. Its difficulty level is moderate.
It begins in a flat agricultural landscape with scattered houses and two typical cisterns and ends near Punta des Llençó. From there, the eastern part of the neighbouring island of Eivissa can be seen.
The El Pilar de La Mola–Faro de la Mola route passes through a rural landscape with livestock and by a traditional house that is listed as architectural heritage.
The combination of distance, walking and cycling times, and difficulty level gives you several points of comparison for planning. The two routes contrast different landscapes ranging from agricultural areas and rural surroundings to coastal cliffs.
When comparing a holiday apartment in Pilar De La Mola, you can place travel dates, apartment type and cancellation policies side by side on the listings page. The cultural highlights, market times and route information can be weighted separately and compared for your personal planning.
