Holiday apartment in La Savina – salt lagoons, coastlines and nature

In La Savina, the Ruta entre salinas begins directly at the port. The 4.5-kilometre route leads around the saltwater lagoon Estany Pudent and combines the landscape with the history of salt production on Formentera.

Landscape and water

West of the port lies Estany des Peix, a small lagoon with a narrow opening to the sea. Small boats can enter through this opening to anchor. Because of the low waves and shallow water, windsurfing, kayaking and sailing with boats of low draught are possible there and can be learned. The lagoon is no more than three metres deep. Estany des Peix also has very shallow bays and warmer water than the sea, making it suitable for a beach outing with children.

Estany Pudent lies between La Savina and Es Pujols. Walks and bicycle tours are possible around the lagoon, and numerous birds can also be observed. Swimming is prohibited in Estany Pudent.

Nature and paths

On the grounds of Can Marroig, visitors may get around only on foot or by bicycle. The access route from La Savina to Can Marroig follows an unpaved path along Estany des Peix to the car park of the recreational area. Can Marroig provides visitors with information and educational activities about the protected natural area.

A road leads from La Savina to Ses Illetes, Es Pujols and Punta Prima in Ses Salines Natural Park. The La Savina–Ses Illetes route begins in the port town of La Savina and follows the path from Sa Guia through juniper groves and dune vegetation in a landscape with turquoise water.

Culture and history

The Molí de Sal is located on the La Savina–Ses Illetes route. The salt produced was loaded there. The Ruta entre salinas presents the history of salt production on Formentera, which was one of the island’s most important economic sectors before the emergence of tourism. The salt produced in this salt-production area was transported by rail to the port of La Savina and exported from there by sea.

Another route leads from La Savina to Cala Saona through a rural setting with fields, dry-stone walls and traditional houses. Sa Pedrera is a rocky coast between the port of La Savina and Cala Saona that was formerly used as a quarry. The coast of Sa Pedrera is recommended for snorkelling because of its shallow water, proximity to the coast and seagrass-covered seabed.

In the immediate vicinity of La Savina, former marès quarries at Punta de Sa Pedrera have become natural pools with turquoise, clear and shallow water suitable for snorkelling. Ibiza’s silhouette can be seen from there.

Getting there and the port

Baleària offers direct high-speed ferries from the port of Ibiza to the port of La Savina on Formentera, with a journey time of 30 minutes. La Savina’s renovated ferry terminal allows tickets to be reserved. In the adjacent marina, private boats can moor or boats can be rented for a day on Formentera’s waters.
