Nature and Water
In Ses Salines Natural Park, the landscape stretches from the north of Formentera to the south of Ibiza. Its salt pans, ponds and islets form an important wetland in the Mediterranean. The wetlands of Salina de Formentera, Estany Pudent and Estany des Peix are particularly rich in waterbirds. Posidonia, an aquatic plant endemic to the Mediterranean, forms extensive underwater meadows around Formentera and is considered a World Heritage Site.

Ses Illetes offers shallow, turquoise waters as well as dune-protection areas, access walkways and designated parking zones. At Formentera’s water sports centres, visitors can enjoy kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, sailing, windsurfing, catamaran sailing and wingfoiling. Water sports offer opportunities to explore places such as s'Estany des Peix, the cliffs of Cala Saona, the waters of Illetes and Espalmador, and the southern coast of Migjorn.
The Ruta entre salinas begins at the port of La Savina and follows a 4.5-kilometre route around the saltwater lagoon of Estany Pudent. In the surrounding area of Formentera are Cala en Baster, Playa de Mitjorn, Real Playa and Platja Es Pujols – all of them beaches.
Culture and History
The Iglesia de Sant Francesc is an 18th-century fortified church in Sant Francesc Xavier and was classified as a cultural asset of special interest in 1996; Sant Francesc Xavier is considered a church in the surrounding area of Formentera. Since 2019, the Faro de la Mola has housed a cultural and educational area dedicated to Formentera’s maritime heritage, with exhibitions and smaller cultural events. The lighthouse stands on a cliff 120 metres above sea level and offers views of the Mediterranean.
The Naveta des Cap de Barbaria is a Bronze Age burial structure dating from around 1700 BC. Castellum Can Blai is a Roman fortification from the 4th century between Sant Ferran and Es Caló; the remains in the surrounding area of Formentera are considered ruins. The Torre des Pi des Català is located near Migjorn Beach and is the only defensive tower in Formentera whose interior can be visited.
The Museu d'Etnografia de Formentera, a museum, is located in the surrounding area of Formentera. The Museu Monogràfic Puig des Molins is located in the wider regional area of Formentera and is also a museum.
Crafts and Events
Formentera’s vibrant craft traditions include gold and silver filigree, basket weaving, esparto-grass work, jewellery and Trencadís ceramics; the items are offered and demonstrated at markets and fairs. The Fira de la Mola is a craft fair held in spring, bringing together artists and craftspeople from Formentera.
At La Mola’s craft market, baskets, espadrilles, jewellery, textiles, as well as works made from glass and ceramics and paintings produced on the island are offered; the programme is complemented by live music, storytelling and dance.
Cuisine
Formentera’s gastronomic weekends take place in May and October; participating restaurants offer special menus. Peix sec is roasted over a fire after drying, crumbled and preserved in jars with olive oil. It is a key ingredient in ensalada payesa and can be sampled in numerous restaurants on the island.
Getting There
Formentera has no airport and can be reached by sea, usually via Ibiza. The crossing from Ibiza to La Savina takes about 35 minutes.
