Es Caló de Sant Agustí is a small fishing settlement on Formentera’s Tramuntana coast, between Sant Ferran and the ascent to El Pilar de la Mola.

Geographical setting

Es Caló beach is located at the narrowest point of the isthmus connecting Formentera’s two opposing elevations. The natural harbour of Es Caló is surrounded by white huts.

Nature

Ses Platgetes has clear, shallow water and is suitable for snorkelling. It is a two-minute walk from Es Caló. Behind Ses Platgetes stretches a dune area where pine trees and junipers grow. In the vicinity of Es Caló, after a turn-off towards Caló des Mort, a path approximately 800 m long leads to the bay. The nearest car park for Ses Platgetes is located in Es Caló de Sant Agustí; from there, access is possible on foot.

Trails

The Camí de Sa Pujada begins in Es Caló. It is an old paved path that climbs as far as La Mola. Route 24 connects Formentera’s Tramuntana coast with the southern coast. It begins in Es Caló de Sant Agustí and runs alongside a wooded area with pine trees and junipers.

Culture

The handcrafted wooden escars of Es Caló were classified in 2002 as an asset of cultural interest (Bien de Interés Cultural). The Festes de Sant Agustí take place every year on 28 August in Es Caló de Sant Agustí. The Festes de Sant Agustí include a traditional dance and folk events. Restaurants serving traditional local cuisine in Es Caló de Sant Agustí are also recommended.

Between Sant Ferran and Es Caló lies an ancient fortress dating from the late Roman imperial period. The ancient fortress was built at the beginning of the 4th century and was never fully completed.
