Coast and Nature
Playa de Santa Marina is Ribadesella’s main town beach and stretches for 1,200 metres. There are several surf schools in the surrounding area offering surf lessons. A wooden promenade makes it possible to explore the surroundings of Playa de Vega. The Entrepeñes y Playa de Vega natural monument also includes a small, valuable dune system, a gorge and an unspoilt beach.
At the Acantilados del Infiernu, a path runs along the edge of the cliffs from the recreational area equipped with tables and benches. The Acantilados del Infiernu route partly passes through the Natura 2000 ZEC and ZEPA area of Ría de Ribadesella – Ría de Tinamayor.
The Cuevona de Cueves provides access to the village of Cueves through a natural cave. Along its approximately 300-metre length, calcareous formations such as stalactites, stalagmites and flowstone formations can be observed.
Paths and Routes
The Ribadesella–La Espasa section of the Camino de Santiago crosses the town, passes over the bridge across the Sella and then follows the left bank of the estuary to Playa de Santa Marina. The Nueva–Ribadesella section of the Camino de Santiago passes through Cuerres and then via El Portiello to Ribadesella.
The Ascensión al Mofrechu hiking route is 16.80 kilometres long.
Culture and History
At the Acantilados de Tereñes, the dinosaur footprints are accessible exclusively at low tide. The site comprises four parallel trackways of ornithopods, one theropod track and a stegosaur track with impressions of hands and feet.
The Cueva de Tito Bustillo houses one of the most significant complexes of Palaeolithic cave art in Europe. Depictions of horses and reindeer dating from between 22,000 and 10,000 BC have been preserved there. The Centro de Arte Rupestre de Tito Bustillo also provides an overview of Asturias’s prehistoric past.
The Ermita de la Virgen de Guía stands on Monte Corberu above Ribadesella. At the Cuevona de Cueves, access to the village is combined with the natural limestone formations visible there.
Local Traditions
The Folixa de la Sidra includes competitions in pouring cider and a public tasting of homemade cider. Dishes highlighted in Ribadesella include Calderetas, prepared with rock fish such as Sargos, red mullet, Gobitos, Xulies or Durdos.
The finish of the Descenso en Piragua del Río Sella is located at a bridge in Ribadesella; the event takes place on the first Saturday in August each year.
