Santa Eulalia de Gállego: River, Trails and Culture

Santa Eulalia de Gállego is the setting for the annual Descenso de nabatas por el río Gállego. The event showcases the historic tradition of transporting timber along the Gállego; its origins date back to the 14th century. It takes place in Biscarrués, Santa Eulalia de Gállego and Murillo de Gállego and is recognised as an activity of tourist interest in Aragón (AITA code 13).

Culture

During the descent, the rafts travel downstream from the river beach in Murillo de Gállego to the railway bridge in Santa Eulalia de Gállego. Thanks to the stops along the route, visitors can follow this ethnographic and natural spectacle from various points.

The Iglesia de Santa Eulalia is a church of Romanesque origin that was remodelled in the 17th century. During Whitsun, a pilgrimage to Santa Quiteria takes place in Santa Eulalia de Gállego; the fiestas mayores in honour of San Roque are celebrated there on 16 August.

The Ruta del Agua, also known as the Ruta de los Sentidos, runs from the railway bridge to the village of Erés. It showcases “riegos de monte”, which store rainwater and even water collected from roofs in small basins. The irrigation system makes it possible to fill the basins one after another and distribute the water evenly within the community.

Landscape

The Mirador de San Pedro, along with the remains of its hermitage, is located on the hill where Santa Eulalia de Gállego stands. From there, visitors can enjoy views of the Mallos de Riglos and the Gállego Valley.

Santa Eulalia de Gállego can be explored via a network of narrow, steep streets that converge around the square by the parish church of Santa Eulalia.

Water and Trails

Rafting trips are offered on the Gállego in Murillo de Gállego and Santa Eulalia de Gállego. The section between the two villages is considered particularly suitable for school groups and families.

Route 6: Sierra Estronad is a 25 km circular route with a cumulative elevation gain of 700 m, starting in Santa Eulalia de Gállego. It passes the Antiguo tejar de Santa Eulalia de Gállego; its rear can be visited to see the old kiln.

Another route leads from Santa Eulalia de Gállego via Morán along a riverside path and offers views of the Mallos de Riglos. It is 7 km long in total and must be completed on foot. The different route lengths help you compare the scope of a planned outing.
