Culture and History

The Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol church in Alagón is part of the Mudéjar Route of the Cinco Villas. Its tower displays the type of Almohad minaret characteristic of Aragonese Mudéjar towers.

The ancient Iberian settlement of Alaun was located around what is now Plaza del Castillo in Alagón. Alaun minted its own coins with inscriptions in an alphabet. The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Hispano-Mexicano is a tourist attraction in Alagón and is located at Plaza de San Antonio 2. It is housed in the basement of the former Jesuit college, which was built in the 18th century.

The former Colegio de San Ignacio contains a medallion with the monogram of the Society of Jesus in its vaulted staircase. Some experts attribute it to Francisco de Goya, while others attribute it to Francisco Bayeu.

Sightseeing and Festivals

The Alagón Tourist Office offers guided tours of the municipality, museum visits, historical and artistic tours, and tourist brochures.

Semana Santa in Alagón has historical roots dating back to the 13th century. In July 2023, it was declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Aragón. Around 2,000 members of the brotherhoods are organised into four brotherhoods. The processions connect the churches of San Pedro, Virgen del Castillo and San Juan. Semana Santa in Alagón also preserves the tradition of the “Paso de la Muerte”.

The feast day of the patronal celebration in honour of San Antonio de Padua in Alagón is 13 June; the feast day of the patronal celebration in honour of the Virgen del Castillo is 8 September. Jueves Lardero is a recurring culinary tradition in Alagón featuring an omelette with chorizo and longaniza, as well as a special bread that Alagón’s bakeries bake only for this festival. The Hogueras de San Antón are celebrated every year at the Recinto Ferial de Alagón, with bonfires being lit.

Trails and Landscape

El Caracol is a recreational area at the natural mouth of the Jalón where it flows into the Canal Imperial de Aragón, and it can be explored by bicycle. When leaving Alagón, the Camino del Ebro passes under the AP-68 motorway and continues along the road to Cabañas de Ebro.
