Talamantes: Moncayo Nature Park, Hiking Trails and Rock Castle

Talamantes is one of the municipalities within whose territory the Parque Natural del Moncayo extends. The Barrancos de Talamantes hiking trail passes through pine plantations to the limestone peaks of the nature park, including the Peñas de Herrera and the Morrón.

Nature and Trails

The GR 90.1 variant from Collado de la Estaca passes the Peñas de Herrera and the Barranco de Valdeherrera before continuing on to Talamantes. A circular hike from the south of the municipality follows the GR 90.1 through the Barranco de Valdetreviño and reaches the Collado de la Era. The Maratón del Moncayo mountain-bike route can be reached from Talamantes via short connecting trails.

The SL-Z 71: Minas de Valdeplata is an out-and-back route 8.2 kilometres long, with a duration of 2 hours 25 minutes, 185 metres of ascent and 185 metres of descent. After one kilometre, the trail reaches a junction where one path leads to Talamantes and the GR-260 branches off. The route follows the stream bed of the Barranco de Valdeplata, crossing it up to seven times via treated wooden footbridges, and passes dry-stone walls and riverside woodland.

The Sima del Tubo is located in the municipality of Talamantes, in the Barranco de Valdeherrera. It can be reached via a path that branches off the Z-371 at kilometre 15.300; the access point is 1.7 kilometres from Talamantes. The cave shaft is 56 metres deep, is of interest for sports caving, is considered the deepest cave shaft in Zaragoza province, and requires technical rope skills for ascending and descending.

The Barranco de Valdeplata rises in the Sierra de la Muela at an altitude of 1,600 metres and forms a deep valley in carbonate Mesozoic formations. It contains well-preserved grasslands and heathlands, abrupt limestone walls, and a species-rich bird population with numerous birds of prey. The GR 90.1 from Talamantes towards Calcena passes along paths between orchards and through the Barranco de Valdetreviño to the stream bed of the Barranco de Valdeplata; abandoned silver mines lie downstream.

The route from Talamantes to the Morrón passes through a holm-oak stand and reaches the Collado de los Castillos de Herrera. Its name derives from the remains of fortifications on the two rocks, Ferrera and Ferrellón. Another route leads from Talamantes via the Sendero Turístico de Aragón GR 90 to the 1,730-metre-high summit of the Morrón and into the area of the Parque Natural del Moncayo. The different route options can be compared by trail type, time frame and technical difficulty.

Culture and History

The Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol is a late Gothic church from the 16th century with a square floor plan and a star-ribbed vault. It contains medieval paintings discovered during restoration work in 2000. The Ermita de San Miguel is a single-nave Romanesque building from the 12th to 13th century.

The Castillo de Talamantes is a typical rock castle whose construction dates back to 1177. In 1209, it was handed over to the Knights Templar and, after their dissolution, passed to the Knights Hospitaller. About half a kilometre from the village, by the Valdeherrera stream on the road to Tabuenca, stands a medieval bridge made of roughly dressed stone, with a rebuilt semicircular arch and stones set upright.

The wine-cellar caves of Val de Justicia form a remarkable group integrated into the landscape, with red sandstone and red gypsum elements and largely preserved interiors. The Camino de la Vera Cruz can also be used for hikes and cycling tours of cultural interest, as well as for experiencing nature and cultural heritage. As a pilgrimage route, it leads from various places in Spain to Caravaca de la Cruz, where the Basílica de la Vera Cruz is located. Historical links exist above all with the Knights Templar and with the routes taken by the Templars and Aragonese to Caravaca de la Cruz.

The Dance de Talamantes has been associated with annual performances since 1998; women had previously been admitted to the group. Its components include a procession with the image of Saint Michael, the Marcha Real, a procession accompanied by dancing, and a performance in the Plaza Alta.

Village Character and Orientation

The Mirador de Escoplé has an information board and benches overlooking La Tonda, the Peñas de Herrera, the Morrón and the Moncayo massif. Talamantes has a picturesque village character, with steep streets and buildings in a traditional vernacular architectural style.

The GR-260, also known as the Calcenada or Vuelta al Moncayo, passes through Talamantes. Talamantes has an unstaffed information point for the Parque Natural del Moncayo, providing information about natural and cultural assets, activities and important regulations. Admission to the nature park is free, and interpretive materials are also available.
