Torres de Alcanadre lies in a broad, predominantly agricultural plain near the banks of the river of the same name. The rocky outcrops formed by the Alcanadre river landscape provide a habitat for endangered or critically endangered birds such as Egyptian vultures, golden eagles, eagle owls and bee-eaters.

Nature

The Ribera del Alcanadre circular hike starts in Torres de Alcanadre and follows the banks of the Alcanadre through Saso terrain, cultivated areas and riverside woodland. The Ribera del Alcanadre hiking route can be reached from the A-22 via the Liesa/Torres de Montes exit and the A-1222 to Blecua, 10 km, and then via the A-1217 to Torres de Alcanadre, 16 km. Parking is available in the village before the trail begins at the San Bartolomé Hermitage.

Hiking and Cycling

The David Gómez Route is a circular route exclusively for hiking and begins at the San Bartolomé Hermitage in Torres de Alcanadre. The Ribera del Alcanadre cycling route runs between Peralta de Alcofea and Lacuadrada along the same historic path used by transhumant herds for their seasonal migrations between the Pyrenees and the plain.

Culture

The parish church of Nuestra Señora was built in the 17th century in the vernacular Baroque style. It has a single-nave interior with a lunette vault, a straight-ended chancel and eight side chapels.

The San Bartolomé Hermitage dates from the 13th to the 17th century. It stands beside the old cemetery on a sandstone hill and offers a beautiful view of the Alcanadre riverbed.

The astronomical observatory is located one kilometre from Torres de Alcanadre in the direction of the San Bartolomé Hermitage and the cemetery.

A document issued by King Alfonso II in 1179 listed Torres de Alcanadre as property of the Casbas Monastery.

Traditions

The pilgrimage to the San Bartolomé Hermitage takes place on Easter Monday and on 24 August. The patron saint festivities of Torres de Alcanadre take place from 24 to 28 August in honour of Saint Bartholomew. The pilgrimage to Puymelero takes place on the first Saturday in May.
