Discover Biniés: Castles, Foz and Pilgrimage

Biniés begins with a striking landmark: Castillo de Biniés stands north of the settlement on the edge of the gorge through which the Veral River flows. In the village, Biniés offers a varied streetscape with doors, door surrounds, chimneys and roof overhangs.

Culture

Its religious heritage includes the parish church of San Salvador, formerly San Sebastián. It was extended in 1755 by the master builder José Bueno. About one kilometre south of Biniés, the Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Pueyo stands on a hill. It can be reached from Biniés by vehicle via an unpaved track. Its tall single-nave interior has particularly robust buttresses, between which chapels are located.

From 1990 onwards, the residents reconstructed the Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Pueyo and revived the pilgrimages. The resumed pilgrimage to the Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Pueyo currently takes place on the first Sunday in August.

Under the second additional provision of Law 3/1999 of 10 March on Aragonese cultural heritage, Castillo de los Urriés is one of the castles classified as Bienes de Interés Cultural. Castillo de los Urriés is a rectangular building with a footprint measuring 22 by 17 metres and three or four storeys. It has four corner towers and an arms courtyard. Castillo de Biniés is a rectangular building with an uncovered inner courtyard, which is rare in Alto Aragón; the rooms were arranged around this courtyard.

The various building forms each have their own focus: at Castillo de los Urriés, the floor plan, storeys, corner towers and arms courtyard are clearly identified, while at Castillo de Biniés, the rare courtyard layout takes centre stage. The church and hermitage complement these secular buildings with religious architecture and the revived pilgrimage.

Nature

The Foz de Biniés in the vicinity of Biniés is a geological site of interest in Aragón and part of the protected landscape of Fozes de Fago y Biniés. Biniés lies in hilly terrain with remnants of holm-oak woodland. In the direction of the Canal de Berdún, extensive grain fields as well as almond and fruit trees stretch out.
