Culture

The Torre de los Guzmanes is a tower built in the 15th century in the Mudéjar style, with defensive and lordly functions. Around 1446, it was built by Juan de Guzmán y Torres, the first lord of La Algaba. The tower is 27 metres high and has four floors connected by a magnificent staircase.

The CICMA – Centro de Interpretación El Cielo Mudéjar de La Algaba – provides an understanding of the history of La Algaba, the appearance of the town in the 15th century, the construction and historical functions of the Torre de los Guzmanes, and the history of the Guzmanes through explanatory panels, computer equipment and audiovisual 3D productions. This cultural context is complemented by several religious buildings: the Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de Las Nieves is a Gothic-Mudéjar parish church with a rectangular main apse and two side chapels at the ends of the side aisles. The Iglesia de Ntro. Padre Jesús Nazareno, Ntra. Sra. de los Dolores, San Juan Evangelista y Santa Cruz del Convento has a Neo-Mudéjar coffered ceiling and a three-part Neo-Baroque altarpiece.

The Ermita de la Inmaculada Concepción y del Salvador has been documented since at least the 18th century; the first documentary references date from 1712. In the El-Aral district, the single-nave church has a camarín at the front, where the image of the Immaculate Conception, particularly venerated in La Algaba, is kept.

Sightseeing

The monuments and tourist resources of La Algaba can currently be visited, although prior appointments are required for some of them. Tourist visits can be self-guided or accompanied. Both complete visits and previously selected sections are possible.

The Puente Rodríguez de la Borbolla, also known as Puente Viejo, is an iron bridge over the Guadalquivir; its current form dates from 1936.

Nature

Los Filtros comprises a riverside forest, a recreational area and an extensive natural area along the Río Rivera de Huelva. The area provides a habitat for birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, including kingfishers, grey herons, otters and genets. La Isleta offers a different riverside landscape: there is a rest area with views of the Río Guadalquivir and riverside trees such as tamarisks, poplars, willows and ash trees.

Traditions and festivals

Los Candevelares is part of the local annual cycle, a centuries-old tradition typical of La Algaba. It is celebrated on 7 December at dusk with large bonfires, Christmas carols and traditional sweets. The Carnaval de La Algaba takes place in February and includes, among other events, the Concurso Provincial de Chirigotas and the large Saturday parade through the town’s main streets.

The Fiestas de los Toros de La Algaba follow in the second week of September. Their tradition dates back to the 16th century. The Fiestas de los Toros de La Algaba have been recognised as a festival of national tourist interest in Andalusia.

Getting around

The Camino de la Romería consists of the two sections Colada Camino de Guillena and Callejón de las Viñas. The route is suitable for sports activities and horseback riding. From Seville, La Algaba can be reached via the A-66 Ruta de la Plata motorway to exit 805 and then via the A-8079, or via the A-8006 road.

Local specialities

Cocido algabeño with Pringá is one of La Algaba’s traditional dishes.
