Brenes can be experienced along the Ruta del Azahar in a clear loop: the circular hiking trail follows the Seville–Brenes–return to Seville itinerary. The route covers 8 km from Parque de la Chirritana in Brenes to Plaza Primero de Mayo near Brenes Town Hall.

Nature

The Ruta del Azahar leads to the Guadalquivir and a riparian forest of great scenic value. The area around the trail is home to a highly diverse range of wildlife, including hoopoes, European nightjars, kingfishers, mallards and purple herons.

Brenes lies between orange and olive groves on the banks of the Guadalquivir. Its fertile agricultural landscape includes the cultivation of olives, cereals, oranges and peaches. The banks of the Guadalquivir near Brenes can be explored on foot or by bicycle; hiking is also possible in the surrounding natural landscape. Fishing is another possible leisure activity on the Guadalquivir near Brenes.

Culture and history

A distinctive local craft tradition is gold embroidery in Brenes. It has existed for more than one hundred years and focuses particularly on religious textile art. Local gold embroidery workshops have completed important commissions for brotherhoods throughout Spain.

Construction of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Brenes was begun in the 14th century by the archbishops of Seville. Inside are a Mudéjar coffered ceiling and Baroque works of art. The church also houses an altarpiece featuring Nuestra Señora del Rosario, the patron saint of Brenes, who is venerated there.

Historical traces are also present outside the church. Hacienda de San Sebastián dates from the late 17th century, formed part of Brenes’s agricultural heritage and was used for olive oil production. Its façade and the tower of the oil mill have been preserved. The chimney known as Torre de la Cigüeña is a surviving testimony to Brenes’s industrial past. The place name Casas del Rey is regarded as an indication of the area’s medieval past.

Festivals and traditions

The Feria de Octubre takes place as part of the celebrations in honour of Nuestra Señora del Rosario. It begins on the Wednesday after the procession of the patron saint and ends on Sunday; it is held approximately between 7 and 10 October. San Sebastián remains a centre of an annual pilgrimage held around the saint’s feast day.

Cercanías line C3 connects Santa Justa with Cazalla and Constantina.
