Holiday apartment in Bormujos: festivals, ecclesiastical art and Andalusian heritage

Bormujos reveals its special character where living tradition and visible history come together. During the annual Corpus Christi celebration, the Blessed Sacrament is carried in procession from the Parish Church of the Incarnation through the town. It is accompanied by the brotherhoods of Bormujos and the children who receive their First Communion that year. Alongside the monstrance, Santo Domingo de Silos, the patron saint of Bormujos, is carried on a simple bier. Rushes and rosemary, carpets made of salt and coloured sawdust, and altars along the processional route shape the festive scene.

Festivals

Another regular event is the Feria de Bormujos during the last week of August. There are around 50 freely accessible marquees serving tapas and wine, as well as daily performances. The festival thus combines culinary impressions and a stage programme within a clearly defined period.

Culture

The Church of the Incarnation was built at the end of the Middle Ages and remodelled in 1681. Its simple exterior portal is designed in the Classical Baroque style. In the upper section of the right nave there is a depiction of Saint Sebastian dating from the first third of the 17th century. The second chapel, dedicated to the Sagrario, contains an 18th-century altarpiece. One façade also features an image made up of eight ceramic tiles in shades of yellow and blue, probably dating from the 18th century, depicting the mystery of the Holy Trinity.

History

One of the area’s notable historic complexes is the small Hacienda Valencinilla del Hoyo. It stands on the top of a hill near the Cañada Real and is arranged around a square courtyard with a central fountain and semicircular arcades. The architecture is white and features details in almagra. The hacienda includes an estate house dating from the 17th century. It already existed in the 11th century and probably developed from an earlier alquería.

The bridge over the Riopudio stream also preserves a precise architectural detail: its opening is approximately four metres wide and has a dressed-stone segmental arch as well as a large brick abutment. Based on the shape of the arch, the bridge is dated to the 18th century; it serves public road traffic.

Nature

The Paseo Botánico in Bormujos is an interactive garden. Its historical elements include dinosaur footprints, dolmens and an obelisk. The Cañada Real de Las Islas–Arroyo Riopudio Nordic walking route also runs in the vicinity of Bormujos. It can be reached via the service road of the A-49 or via the A-474 between Bormujos and Bollullos de la Mitación.

Geographical location

The M-101 circular bus route connects Bormujos with Mairena del Aljarafe, San Juan de Aznalfarache, Tomares and Castilleja de la Cuesta.

Cuisine

At the Santa María la Real Monastery, the Dominican nuns who live there make sweets. Typical dishes of Bormujos include menudo, caldereta, arroz con perdiz, sopa de tomates and ropa vieja. Typical drinks include local mosto and orange wine.
