Holiday apartment in Alpandeire: culture, trails and festivals

Alpandeire, as a present-day village, dates back to the 8th century and still preserves the influence of Andalusian-Arabic culture in its street layout. The village was one of the first fortified settlements in the Serranía de Ronda by Muslims. Here, history can be encountered not only in stories, but also in prominent buildings, religious sites and traces in the landscape.

Culture and history

The parish church of Alpandeire was built in the 18th century. It contains the baptismal font in which Fray Leopoldo was baptised, and the church is visited by numerous pilgrim groups from throughout Andalusia. The Casa Natal de Fray Leopoldo is furnished to help visitors understand how people lived in Alpandeire in the second half of the 19th century. The birthplace includes his room, his parents’ room, a simply furnished living room, a small chapel and a central courtyard.

Older traces are also found within the village area: archaeological finds have been made at Cerro de Castillejos, while Chalcolithic dolmens were discovered in the Encinas Borrachas area. The Baroque chapel of San Roque contains paintings from that period.

Festivals and religious sites

The Fiestas de San Roque include two processions through the village. The festival takes place on the weekend closest to 16 August. Another traditional celebration is Niño del Huerto on Easter Sunday. Alpandeire celebrates the festival of the Virgen del Rosario on 7 October.

Landscape and trails

In the Genal Valley, extensive chestnut forests form the woodland known as the Bosque de Cobre. It surrounds Alpandeire and other white villages, among others. The Sendero de los Huertos passes through agricultural areas and traditional gardens, through landscapes rich in water and along irrigation channels. The trail includes various climbs and changes in elevation and is not recommended for people with reduced mobility.

The Ruta de Fray Leopoldo passes through Jimera de Líbar, Atajate and Alpandeire. It follows the route Fray Leopoldo took from Jimera de Líbar railway station via Atajate and through Audalázar to Alpandeire. The route between Atajate and Alpandeire is a ten-kilometre linear hiking trail, takes about four and a half hours and connects the Sendero de los Huertos with the fifth stage of the Gran Senda de la Serranía de Ronda (GR 141). In 2025, the Ruta de Fray Leopoldo was maintained and in use.

As early as 2013, the section of the Ruta de Fray Leopoldo in Alpandeire was signposted with information boards and footprints in the road surface. These lead to Fray Leopoldo’s birthplace and the church. The different trail characteristics, the village’s history and the festivals provide various focal points for planning your trip.
