Getting Around

The PR-A-222 connects Cartajima and Igualeja through dense chestnut forests and the Río Nacimiento valley. It crosses the Río Nacimiento at a ford and then climbs towards the mountain ridge of Igualeja. The route leads into Igualeja via Calle Hiladero. Igualeja’s trail network comprises three hiking routes through natural and cultural landscapes. The SL-A 173 hiking trail can be completed by bicycle.

The Ermita del Divino Pastor is an 18th-century chapel with a trapezoidal floor plan in the Andalusian Baroque style.

El Albaicín is Igualeja’s old quarter. It features winding streets and whitewashed houses whose stone walls rest on the rock.

The pasos of Holy Week are considered famous in Igualeja. They depict scenes from the Passion with elaborate decorations and involve more than 60 people. Since the beginning of the 21st century, a depiction of the Passion of Jesus Christ has been recorded in Igualeja for every Holy Saturday.

Annual Calendar

Igualeja’s patron-saint festivities take place from 29 August to 2 September in honour of San Gregorio Magno and Santa Rosa de Lima. The chestnut harvest in Igualeja begins at the end of September and the beginning of October; the most important variety is the pilonga chestnut. Igualeja celebrates the so-called “Toro de Fuego” festival.
