Cartajima – Culture, Nature and Hiking Routes

Cartajima preserves an Islamic-influenced townscape with narrow, winding streets. The creative façades route adds an artistic accent: it showcases a dozen murals inspired by rural life and is designed as a walking tour for locals and visitors.

Culture

The “Nuestros Insectos” mural is located opposite the Ntra. Sra. Virgen del Rosario Church, on the façade of Cartajima Town Hall, and depicts the surrounding nature. The Nuestra Señora del Rosario Church was built in the 16th century in the Mudejar-Renaissance style. During a festival, wine tasting, traditional dishes and handcrafted products are available at stalls from midday onwards.

When planning personally, art, architectural history and festival activities can be considered as separate cultural highlights. This leaves room for different interests without combining the individual impressions into a single experience.

Nature

Los Riscos de Cartajima is a significant karst landscape within the municipality of Cartajima. It features limestone formations of various shapes. The Castaño Arenas is a notable chestnut tree in Cartajima. It is approximately 17 metres tall and has a circumference of more than 7 metres at a height of 1.30 metres.

A viewpoint is located approximately 500 metres from the centre of Cartajima and offers panoramic views of Cancha Almola, Los Riscos de Cartajima, the municipality itself and large parts of the Genal Valley. There is also a recreation area there. For a day in nature, the preferred perspective can shift between geological formations, the dimensions of a single tree and a wide panorama.

The landscape can therefore be experienced at different scales: the limestone formations represent geological shapes, the Castaño Arenas represents a single tree with precisely stated dimensions, and the viewpoint opens up views across several destinations. This comparison complements the view of the town with different ways of perceiving Cartajima spatially and visually, without reducing the nature topics to a single motif.

Hiking

The PR-A-224 hiking trail connects Cartajima and Júzcar over approximately 2.9 kilometres. The linear route takes about one hour, is considered easy and is suitable for families. The PR-A-222 hiking trail connects Cartajima and Parauta over approximately 4.5 kilometres and takes about one and a half hours.

The different route lengths and walking times help compare a shorter and a longer hiking option for your own daily rhythm. Together with the cultural and landscape topics, this creates a selection of different visitor focuses, without the routes having to share the same character.
