Sedella – Nature, Culture and Wine

Sedella is one of the municipalities in the Province of Málaga located within the Parque Natural Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama. The natural park encompasses high mountains, deeply incised valleys, streams, extensive grazing areas and forests. The Parque Natural Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama, which includes Sedella, was designated a Zona de Especial Protección para las Aves (ZEPA) in 2003 and a Zona Especial de Conservación (ZEC) in 2016. In the lush natural landscape, the Matanzas, Encinar and Granados streams carry abundant water and support diverse vegetation.

Nature

The Centro de Visitantes Sedella is located in Sedella, in the part of the Parque Natural Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama belonging to the Province of Málaga. It offers a reception, an environmental shop and information about the Andalusian network of protected natural areas. The GR-249 Gran Senda de Málaga passes through the upper part of Sedella and runs along an irrigation channel above the village.

Culture

The Castillo of Sedella is a small fortress adapted to the terrain, dating from between the 10th and 15th centuries; it is listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC). The ruins of a large fortress have been preserved on a hill near Sedella.

Sedella is one of five villages along the 40-kilometre Ruta Mudéjar. The Casa Torreón in Sedella is part of the region’s civil Mudéjar heritage. The original Iglesia de San Andrés was built at the beginning of the 16th century. Following the severe damage caused by the Morisco uprising, only the tower remained; the Iglesia de San Andrés houses religious sculptures from the 17th and 18th centuries as well as an 18th-century painting.

The Molino de Montosa, also known as Molino Alto, is located on the slope of a hill near the centre of Sedella; it has existed since at least 1752. Restoration began in 1994. Inside, there is a milling room on the upper floor and original Mazarí tiled floors.

The Puente Romano is a well-preserved stone bridge with a single arch and probably medieval origins; it is located about 500 metres from the centre of Sedella. At the southeastern edge of Sedella stands the Ermita de la Virgen de la Esperanza, which dates from the 17th century and is very well preserved.

Wine

Bodega Sedella offers tours of the winery, walks through centuries-old vineyards and wine tastings. The bodega has a tasting room with panoramic views of the sea and mountains.
