Guadalmina – Golf, Coastal Coves and Cultural History

The Real Club de Golf Guadalmina has two 18-hole golf courses, a nine-hole par-3 course, and a covered driving range for 40 players. The South Course opened in 1959. Various golf formats and a dedicated practice facility are located side by side on the grounds; the opening year also provides a historical reference point within the complex.

Nature

The Río Guadalmina is protected as Special Area of Conservation ES6170021. At its mouth, the protected area includes a small lagoon used by waterbirds and waders for foraging. The protected ecosystem of the Río Guadalmina contributes, among other things, to the preservation of a local otter population.

In the beach area at the river mouth, there is a publicly used bathing area within the protected area. Guadalmina Beach consists of several coves. San Pedro Alcántara Beach (Guadalmina) was awarded the Blue Flag in 2026. In terms of thematic selection, the coves and bathing area can be assigned to the beach area, while the lagoon and river ecosystem belong to the protected natural environment.

Culture and History

The Torre de las Bóvedas was built between 1571 and 1575. It formed part of the network of watchtowers along the coast. The tower has a circular ground plan and a truncated-cone-shaped structure. Its construction period, coastal connection, and form provide the defensive structure with a clearly recognizable historical and architectural classification.

The Roman Baths of Las Bóvedas were built in the 2nd century AD. They are octagonal in layout and surrounded by seven radially arranged, also octagonal rooms. The Roman Baths of Las Bóvedas in Marbella (Málaga) are designated as an Asset of Cultural Interest in the category of an archaeological zone. Their geometry clearly distinguishes them from the circular ground plan of the Torre de las Bóvedas.

In the area around Guadalmina is the early Christian Basilica of Vega del Mar, a complex consisting of a double-apsed basilica and a necropolis. The basilica has a baptistery with several baptismal pools; one of them combines the Greek cross with the shape of a fish in its ground plan and was designed for baptism by immersion. The complex complements the Roman structures and the watchtower with an early Christian monument featuring its own architectural vocabulary. For cultural selection, coastal defense, Roman architectural geometry, and early Christian religious architecture can be distinguished.
