Discover Mondrón

Mondrón showcases its olive oil tradition in a place where history and the present stand side by side. The Museo del Aceite is housed in the Cooperativa Olivarera San José Artesano, founded in 1967, and is one of Mondrón’s most important cultural attractions. It combines historical exhibitions with a visit to an operating olive oil mill.

Olive oil and gastronomy

Outside the museum, a route also explores the culinary and agricultural character of the surrounding area. The Ruta del Aceite y los Montes is 67.7 kilometres long and runs through Periana as well as Riogordo, Colmenar, Alfarnate, Alfarnatejo, Alcaucín and La Viñuela. It is dedicated to the tradition of olive oil production and the gastronomy of the participating municipalities. Culture

The Iglesia de San Fernando is an important religious and social meeting place in Mondrón. The original church was rebuilt after the 1884 earthquake. In the town’s festival calendar, the festivities in honour of Saint Ferdinand are the most important celebration. The celebration normally includes a solemn mass and a procession carrying the image of the saint through the streets of Mondrón.

The Fuente de Mondrón is also part of the area’s historical everyday culture. It is a historic communal water point and is also considered a watering trough for livestock. Another historical reference is provided by the Baños de Vilo in the vicinity of Mondrón: they are located in the municipality of Periana, on the Río Guaro. There, at a sulphur spring with a constant temperature of 21°C, there is a restored plunge pool. Some authors associate its use with the Andalusian period and the alquerías of Mondrón, Guaro and Bilo.

Nature

The Río Guaro is the most important watercourse that has shaped the landscape and settlement development in the Mondrón area. Fertile valleys and vega areas developed along the river and were traditionally used for irrigated agriculture. The combination of mountain landscape, river environment and olive groves offers various thematic focal points for planning excursions together.

The MA-4103 provincial road is the most important road connection from Mondrón to Periana.
