Discover Veredas: Hiking Trails, Fandango and Local Festivals

A notable route through Las Veredas is the livestock trail “Vereda de las Veredas a Calabazares”. It is walkable along its entire length and connects the villages of Las Veredas, Almonaster la Real and Calabazares.

Hiking

On the route from Las Veredas to Acebuche, the trail initially follows the HU-8107 road for approximately 350 metres. It then turns right onto a path currently signposted as a hiking trail and crosses the Huelva–Zafra railway line via an underpass.

The PR®-A 448 hiking trail “Las Aldeas de Poniente” also passes through Las Veredas. The first section of the “Sendero Aldeas de Poniente” hiking trail follows the old Camino Real de Mérida and crosses various ecosystems. The “Sendero Almonaster y aldeas de Poniente” hiking trail is 11.7 kilometres long and forms a circular route.

Different route lengths and trail types allow you to sort the route options by distance and circular-route characteristics. The trails in Las Veredas can also be distinguished by further specific features: the section towards Acebuche begins with around 350 metres on the HU-8107 and then continues along a signposted path and through the underpass beneath the Huelva–Zafra railway line. In contrast, there is the 11.7-kilometre circular route and the initial section along the old Camino Real de Mérida with its various ecosystems. In this way, the road section, underpass, circular route and passage through the landscape emerge as distinct route elements.

Geographical Setting

Along one section, the livestock trail “Vereda de las Veredas a Calabazares” runs parallel to the Barranco del Fresno, at an average distance of approximately 100 metres, and then reaches the village of Las Veredas.

Las Veredas can be reached via the same road that also leads to the hamlets of El Arroyo and Acebuches.

Culture

Las Veredas maintains its own variation of the Fandango de la Cruz, particularly the “repicao” fandango, which is named after the striking of the tambourine.

At the celebration at Cruz del Hoyo, the serranas gather at around 6:30 p.m., sing their Coplas del Romero and begin the procession through the streets of the village of Las Veredas.

The Cruz del Hoyo de las Veredas is celebrated on the second weekend of May.

The traditional houses in Las Veredas are predominantly single-storey and have an attic as well as an inner courtyard or garden.

For planning your time in Las Veredas, two different reference points stand side by side: the celebration on the second weekend of May and the start of the procession at around 6:30 p.m. The “repicao” fandango adds its own musical form to this festival programme, while the traditional houses with attics and inner courtyards or gardens represent a separate feature of the villagescape. This keeps the date, music, procession and architectural style recognisable as distinct aspects.

The “Encuentros Micológicos” took place in Las Veredas in several editions; the dates recorded are 23 and 24 November as well as 25 and 26 November 2023.
