Galaroza – Chestnut Forests, Culture and Festivals

Galaroza lies within the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park and is characterised by its chestnut groves. A specific route through this landscape is the Camino de Galaroza a Fuenteheridos: The hiking trail is 6 km long, rated easy and leads through chestnut, cork oak and pine forests.

Nature

The municipality’s natural area includes the El Talenque recreational area. It is located near the village of Navahermosa on the road towards Valdelarco. There is a picnic area with tables, benches and barbecue facilities, a children’s playground, waste bins and a drinks kiosk operated by the Ayuntamiento de Galaroza. The area also contains a small, well-preserved stand of native Pyrenean oak.

Culture and History

Galaroza’s designated historic area is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Conjunto Histórico category. The Ermita de Santa Brígida stands on the Cerro overlooking the village. From there, views extend across the Múrtiga Valley and a wide arc of the surrounding sierras.

In the town centre stands the Fuente de Nuestra Señora del Carmen, popularly known as the Fuente de los Doce Caños. The ornamental fountain, built in 1889, is naturally fed by a spring at the foot of the Cerro de Santa Brígida. The Parroquia de la Purísima Concepción is a prominent 17th-century church with late-16th-century classical elements and a deep presbytery. The Iglesia del Carmen stands on the site of an earlier chapel dedicated to Saint Sebastian and houses a neoclassical altarpiece featuring the image of the Virgen del Carmen, Galaroza’s patron saint.

In the village of Navahermosa, the design of the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario is directly derived from works by the architect Hernán Ruiz II. The Centro de Interpretación del Patrimonio Histórico de Galaroza presents Galaroza’s history and culture through photographs, interactive videos and models of the monuments. It also displays elements from the municipality’s historical heritage and contemporary traditions. Visits can be arranged by telephone on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Traditions and Crafts

Galaroza’s water culture is connected with the Múrtiga River, irrigation channels and the surrounding gardens. On Easter Sunday, residents and visitors climb up to the Cerro de Santa Brígida, bringing the traditional egg and bollo with them.

The Matanza Tradicional takes place over the weekend near the Día de Andalucía. Social groups organise it together with the Ayuntamiento; two Iberian pigs are processed, followed by a barbecue. Crafts are also part of the town’s history: Making chairs with rush seats was a firmly established tradition in Galaroza for a long time, but has declined considerably in recent years. Today, Galaroza has numerous businesses producing furniture, doors, windows and chairs from various types of wood, as well as several artisans who work with stone, wood and leather.

Festivals and Events

Las Cruces de Mayo includes a mass at Las Pizarrillas on 3 May. During the patron saint festivities of the Virgen del Carmen in Galaroza, the traditional Bajada procession carries the image of the Virgin from her Ermita to the parish church. The Fiesta del Rosario is celebrated in the village of Navahermosa on the first weekend of October.

The Días de la Amistad programme lasts fifteen days and includes exhibitions of paintings and photographs, theatre, musical performances, as well as sports and recreational games. During the Fiesta de Los Jarritos, people travelling along the municipality’s streets are splashed with water. The Cross del Agua runs partly through the town centre and mostly along paths in the area surrounding Galaroza. The La Divina Pastora pilgrimage takes place at the end of May on the larger municipal finca, which includes the El Talenque grounds.
