Discover Lepe: Culture, Coast and Holiday Apartments

Lepe can be explored through its cultural history, trails, coastal landscapes and local traditions. Particularly striking is the almost 15-kilometre-long Flecha de Nueva Umbría at the mouth of the Río Piedras. Culture and history

The Real de la Almadraba de Nueva Umbría is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest and classified as an ethnological site. Until it closed in 1963, it was the most important tuna-fishing production facility on the coast of Huelva.

The free-standing Capilla San Cristóbal dates from the 16th century and was built in the Mudéjar style. During its restoration, parts of the original wall and vault paintings were uncovered or restored. In the centre of Lepe is Plaza de España, where the town’s main streets converge. The Iglesia Santo Domingo de Guzmán is also located on this square. It originally dates from the 16th century, was built in the Gothic-Mudéjar style and was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1985.

The Casa Museo Castillo de Lepe has a library with more than 3,000 volumes. It is also intended to house a permanent exhibition on the history of the town and its popular customs, as well as an archive of historical documents. In Parque del V Centenario stands a sculptural ensemble created by Francisca Abreu as a tribute to the sailors from Lepe who took part in the discovery of America.

Traditions and local history

The Romería de la Bella takes place around the second weekend of May. In May 2026, it was recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Andalucía, meaning a festival of tourist interest in Andalusia. Cruz Primera has always been an obligatory stop on the pilgrimage of the Virgen de la Bella.

Trails and landscape

The Ruta de la Tavirona runs along the former railway embankment and has a predominantly compacted earth surface. The route is considered easy and is suitable for walking, cycling or exercising. Access to this coastal route on the Via Verde Litoral is next to the former Lepe railway station.

The Ruta Parque de los Cabezos is a circular route with a low level of difficulty. From there, views extend over a wooded area on the coast and large sections of the beaches. Another route leads to Playa de La Antilla: the Sendero Azul is just over three kilometres long, designed for pedestrians and cyclists, and connects the developed beach area with the dune path in the Marismas de Nueva Umbría nature area.

Nature and water

Hiking, environmental education and birdwatching are possible in the Marismas del Río Piedras and Flecha de Nueva Umbría nature area. Puerto de El Terrón has facilities for water sports; fishing with a rod and trolling are possible there. From Puerto de El Terrón, you can travel upstream by motorboat through the Marismas del Río Piedras nature area and along the Flecha de Nueva Umbría.

Local character

Zampuzo El Rata was founded in 1932 and has three generations of history. The owner produces the wine himself; various dishes or tapas are also occasionally served there.
