Nature
Jabugo is located in the Parque Natural de la Sierra de Aracena y los Picos de Aroche, a protected natural area with dehesas, forests characterised by holm oaks, cork oaks and chestnut trees, streams and low hills.
Jabugo is one of the 31 municipalities in the production area of DOP Jabugo around the Parque Natural Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche in the province of Huelva, Andalusia, Spain; the dehesas in this area are recognised by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve.
History and Architecture
El Tiro is a historic building designed by the architect Aníbal González.
The Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel church in Jabugo was built between 1722 and 1746 and combines Mudéjar, Baroque, Neoclassical and Andalusian influences.
The interior of the Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel contains sculptures of the Sagrada Familia, paintings of Santo Domingo with the Virgen del Rosario, as well as numerous altarpieces.
Crafts and Tradition
The Centro de Interpretación del Encaje de Bolillos y de la Artesanía Chacinera de Jabugo presents an exhibition on the history of bobbin lace, including the techniques and work of Jabugo residents.
The second floor of the Centro de Interpretación del Encaje de Bolillos y de la Artesanía Chacinera de Jabugo focuses on Jabugo’s historical ties to the Iberian pork-processing industry.
The Centro de Interpretación del Encaje de Bolillos y de la Artesanía Chacinera de Jabugo is located at Calle Castelar 6 and can be visited Monday to Sunday by prior telephone appointment.
Sightseeing
The Montesierra experience is a guided tour of the drying rooms and cellars of Montesierra S.A., a company located in the centre of Jabugo; the company is registered under DOP Jabugo.
The Montesierra tour can be supplemented with a tasting of ham bearing the protected designation of origin DOP Jabugo.
As part of a visit to the Centro de Innovación y Promoción del Ibérico, El Tiro can be visited and contains information panels as well as a cellar for tastings; the building also offers views over an extensive dehesa area.
