La Redondela between beach, wetland and culture

The clearest spatial reference is Playa de La Redondela: it is 1,220 metres long and 80 metres wide. Dunes and pine trees line the beach, while rows of reed mats protect it from windblown sand. A wooden boardwalk extends to the middle of the beach.

Coast

The facilities at Playa de La Redondela include toilets, showers, foot-washing stations, litter bins, a cleaning service and a children’s area. In La Redondela, pedal boats, paddleboards, jet skis, kayaks and banana boats are also available for hire. This makes it possible to incorporate different types of activities separately into your daily itinerary.

Nature

The La Redondela recreation area is located in the public forest “Dunas de Isla Cristina”, in a wooded area. It has basic facilities, but no barbecue areas; access for motor vehicles is restricted to protect the ecosystem. From La Redondela, it can be reached via the H-3400 towards Isla Cristina.

The Sendero Laguna del Prado begins on the outskirts of La Redondela at Calle de la Cerquilla and leads to the former railway station. The one-way route is approximately 1,500 metres long and takes about 20 minutes. Laguna del Prado is a freshwater wetland in a depression above the Arroyo del Prado. Viewpoints with wide-ranging panoramas also show how the natural landscape has changed through the use of the area.

The Camino Natural Vía Verde del Litoral leads to the former stop at La Redondela, which has now been converted into a sports centre. Beach, forest and wetland can be compared as distinct landscape areas.

Culture

Castillo de la Redondela is listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural and classified as a monument. Huerta Noble is listed in the Catálogo General del Patrimonio Histórico Andaluz as a Lugar de Interés Etnológico. The site was established at the end of the 18th century as an agricultural complex that was rare in the province of Huelva, combining horticulture and olive cultivation with pigeon breeding and facilities for processing the produce. The Sala Mudéjar in La Redondela dates from the 15th century.

Traditions

The Procesión del Huerto in La Redondela takes place on Easter Sunday. During the procession, the Virgen de la Esperanza and the Christ Child proceed separately and meet at the intersection of Santa María and Real streets.

The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de los Doce Apóstoles in La Redondela houses Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno, a sculpture made of wood and pigments, signed by Antonio León Ortega and dated 1941.

The Romería de Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza takes place in June in the pine groves on La Redondela beach. It is a traditional annual event that attracts numerous pilgrims and visitors.
