Gibraleón – Culture, Trails and the Río Odiel

The Castillo de Gibraleón and its surroundings are protected in Andalusia as an Asset of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) in the Monument category. The fortification, which is of Islamic origin, was reused in the late Middle Ages and remodelled in the Modern Age. It stands on the left bank of the Río Odiel in a strategic position for monitoring the ford and the marshland forming below it.

Culture and history

The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) in the Monument category. It was built in the Mudéjar style with later Baroque additions. Its Gothic-Mudéjar main chapel is connected to a later nave in the style of Purist Baroque.

The Convento de Nuestra Señora del Vado is the surviving temple of a monastery founded in 1587 by the Dukes of Béjar and preserves a Mudéjar roof structure. The CODAC houses Gibraleón’s municipal art collection, comprising more than 200 works, as well as spaces for exhibitions, book presentations, lectures and discussion forums.

Trails

Near Gibraleón, the Vía Verde del Litoral crosses the Río Odiel over the railway bridge. The 49-kilometre route can be used on foot, by bicycle or on horseback.

The Ruta de las Fuentes is an approximately 4-kilometre-long, easy route through interesting areas of Gibraleón. Its stops include the Río Odiel, the castle ruins, the Arroyo El Tejar and Parque Fuente del Oro.

The Paseo San Felice Circeo offers 2.5 kilometres for walking or cycling and is connected to the Vía Verde del Litoral. The Puerta Verde de Huelva–Gibraleón–San Juan del Puerto is a route for walkers, cyclists and horse riders, with a destination in Gibraleón. Landscape

South of Gibraleón’s town centre, the Marismas del Odiel nature area extends along both banks of the Río Odiel near its mouth. It is recognised by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve.

Festivals and food

The Feria de San Lucas includes a regional arts and crafts fair, an exhibition of local businesses and a livestock fair at which horses are mainly traded.

The Romería y Fiestas de San Isidro takes place over a weekend and includes singing, dancing, the blessing of the fields and a floral offering at the pilgrimage site.

In the taverns or bodegas of Gibraleón, which are run by the winegrowers themselves, visitors can cook meat and fish by the fireplace in winter and enjoy them with Mosto panturrano.
