Aljaraque is particularly defined by the Marisma de las Carboneras: the protected tidal marsh lies in the urban surroundings of Corrales, Bellavista and Aljaraque and borders the Paraje Natural Marismas del Odiel. When comparing a holiday rental in Aljaraque, you can consider travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions separately from the local area features.

Nature

The Marisma de las Carboneras can be explored via a municipal elevated wooden walkway that crosses the marshland and connects Corrales and Bellavista with the area of the former “Las Vegas” campsite. Around 40 bird and other vertebrate species have been documented in the Marisma de las Carboneras. Endangered species include the red-crested pochard, the black tern, the white-headed duck and the osprey. The landscape features typical vegetation of the middle marsh, tidal channels and drainage ditches; most of its substrate consists of silt and clay.

Trails and Landscape

Aljaraque has a pine belt crossed by numerous paths and trails, leading into Mediterranean woodland with mastic shrubs, rosemary and rockroses. The Vía Multimodal Marismas de Aljaraque is designated as a cycle path and is shared by cyclists and pedestrians; motorised vehicles are prohibited there. It was developed as an alternative connection to the conventional roads between the municipality’s four settlement centres and upgraded as a tourism resource.

The Vía Verde Tharsis-Odiel is an approximately 30-kilometre-long, intermunicipal green infrastructure connecting Huelva, Aljaraque and Gibraleón and open to the public. Different trail types, uses and the approximate route framework provide several objective points of comparison for planning your trip.

Other places: Jabugo, Sanlúcar De Guadiana, Veredas, Lepe, Villalba Del Alcor, Cumbres Mayores, La Nava and Nerva.

Culture and History

The Romería de Corrales is held on the first weekend of May in Corrales, a district of the municipality of Aljaraque, in honour of Nuestra Señora Reina del Mundo and San José Obrero. The festival is recognised as an event of historical, cultural and social value; historical information about it is accessible to visitors.

The tidal mill Molino mareal Las Cojillas stands in the Odiel marshes of the municipality of Aljaraque. It was built before 1750 and used tidal energy for mechanical work, particularly grain milling.

The Casino Minero de Corrales began operating in 1918 as a cultural and leisure centre with a library, built by the Cía. de Tharsis, and served to entertain the company’s workers.

The tower of the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios was built in 1757 by Joaquín Herrera according to a design by Pedro de San Martín.

The excavated structures in Aljaraque form part of a large settlement and indicate a complex urban organisation.
