Ayamonte – Churches, Mills and Coast

In Ayamonte, the Iglesia parroquial del Salvador dates from the 15th century. On the coast stands the Torre de Canela, a military coastal defence tower; it is also designated an Asset of Cultural Interest. Together with the Molino de El Pintado and several religious buildings, the town’s history spans from medieval origins to the modern era.

Culture and History

Casa Grande houses the facilities of Ayamonte’s municipal cultural department. The building dates from 1745 and displays Flemish panels by Jan Sanders Van Hemessen from the 16th century. The Molino de El Pintado is a tidal mill and is designated an Asset of Cultural Interest. The mill used the power of the tides to drive its millstones; it once had six fully operational millstones.

The Casa-Museo de La Soledad preserves the items required for the Good Friday penitential procession. A temple dependent on a Franciscan monastery was built in the first half of the 16th century and catalogued as an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1931. A parish church dates from the second quarter of the 16th century; it houses the Virgen de las Angustias, the patron saint of the town of Ayamonte. A chapel was founded in the 16th century by the guild of seafarers and designated an Asset of Cultural Interest.

The procession of the Virgen del Carmen includes residents carrying the statue to the river. It is accompanied and guarded by fishing boats. The religious traditions thus stand alongside buildings whose origins date back to the 15th and 16th centuries.

Coast and Nature

One beach is more than 1,700 metres long and 150 metres wide. It has fine, golden sand; its access routes run along footbridges to protect the existing vegetation, including Linaria lamarckii, which is endemic to Andalusian flora and endangered.

One beach has fine, golden sand, moderate waves, extensive visitor facilities and shallow areas created by sandbanks. One beach is located near the San Bruno Special Protection Area and the mouth of the Río Guadiana. A beach also includes a protected area for native birds such as the Kentish plover to breed.

Activities

Kitesurfing and surfing are practised at one beach, which also has kitesurfing schools. Windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding and surfing are practised at one beach. A breakwater leads to the Ría Carreras, which is suitable for fishing. One beach has a small viewpoint, a swimming channel and a fishing area.

During the summer season, one beach hosts a craft market, a book fair and open-air cinema screenings. The Camino de Valdecerros y Vera abajo is designated as a hiking route in Ayamonte.
