Minas de Riotinto showcases mining history on an unusual scale. Corta Atalaya is an open-pit mine with an elliptical crater measuring more than 1,200 metres at its widest point, 900 metres at its narrowest and 365 metres deep.
History
The seven visitor sites of the Río Tinto Mining Park cover 500 hectares across the municipalities of Minas de Riotinto, Nerva and El Campillo. The Río Tinto Mining Park is the most important result of efforts to make the mining heritage accessible, which the Río Tinto Foundation has restored over almost four decades.
The Cuenca Minera de Riotinto-Nerva, protected as a Heritage Zone, encompasses the architectural and urban-planning heritage shaped by English influences in Minas de Riotinto, as well as in the mining districts and settlements of El Valle, Alto de la Mesa, La Dehesa and Bellavista.
Museums
The Mining Museum presents 5,000 years of mining history in 17 exhibition rooms and is housed in the completely restored former hospital of the Rio Tinto Company Ltd.
The historical archive of the Río Tinto Mining Park preserves more than 5,000 years of mining history. The Matilde Gallardo Ethnological Interpretation Centre is an exhibition centre that explains the way of life of the mining community through various museographic elements.
Culture
Casa 21 was built in 1885 and offers insights into the way of life and leisure habits of the British community around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The Victorian Quarter of Bella Vista was established in 1883 as a separate district for the growing English workforce.
Exploration
The Mining Tourist Railway has restored part of the original line that connected the mines with the port of Huelva from 1875 onwards. The Mining Railway runs on a return journey alongside the former ore-processing areas and railway facilities; the Río Tinto and its mining landscapes accompany it along the way.
Places open to visitors include La Tierra Roja and El Gran Muro Negro, which can be explored on walking tours. A tourist tour takes about 90 minutes and is adapted to the development of the mining operations. A guided tour starts at the Mining Museum.
Nature
The Río Tinto has red, highly acidic water with a pH of 2.2. It is home to microorganisms that feed on minerals and are adapted to extreme conditions.
Train rides, walking tours and guided tours can be regarded as different forms of exploration; their routes, durations and starting points provide various reference points for planning the day.
