Zalamea La Real – Megalithic Remains and Historic Routes

Culture

The Dólmenes de El Pozuelo were designated a Site of Special Cultural Interest (B.I.C.) in 2002, in the category of an archaeological zone. The Dólmenes de El Pozuelo are among the most significant megalithic archaeological complexes in Europe.

Los Aulagares has been designated a Site of Special Cultural Interest (B.I.C.) since 1994, in the category of an archaeological zone; the excavations are located on large, rounded rhyolite stones and belong to megalithic schematic art. The rock engravings of Los Aulagares date from 1800 to 1500 BC.

The Mina de Chiflón is located next to the Los Llanetes group in the archaeological complex of the Dólmenes de El Pozuelo. The Mina de Chiflón is described as Europe's oldest underground metallurgical mine.

Landscape

As a natural viewpoint, the Mina Chinflón offers views of steep slopes, low, gently rounded landforms, holm-oak dehesas, Mediterranean woodland and eucalyptus plantations. Routes and Traditions

The Ruta del Ferrocarril Minero runs along the first Spanish railway line used exclusively for transporting minerals; it was in operation from 1870 to 1969. When the Ruta del Ferrocarril Minero is carried out, registered participants start from the Oficina de Turismo.

The Ermita del Santo Sepulcro is the final station of the Vía Sacra. The Vía Sacra takes place every Good Friday and has existed since the mid-18th century. A Romería has been celebrated since the late 1970s and takes place on the second weekend of May.
