Puerto de La Laja on the Guadiana: Industrial Heritage and Trails

Puerto de La Laja has an unusual industrial heritage. The Muelle-Cargadero and the town centre of Puerto de La Laja, the former route of the mining railway, and the settlement at Cañada del Sardón in El Granado (Huelva) are listed in the General Catalogue of Andalusian Historical Heritage as Bien de Interés Cultural sites under the typology Lugar de Interés Industrial.

Culture

1858 is documented as the first recorded year of operation for the mineral loading pier in Puerto de La Laja. The settlement of Puerto de La Laja was founded as a result of the construction of the loading pier in the last quarter of the 19th century.

In the settlement, the «cuarteladas» are clearly recognisable, a typical form of small miners’ houses arranged in parallel rows of blocks. The building form makes the historic character of the place immediately legible, without depending on a single building.

Part of the original urban structure and the original buildings of the settlement of Puerto de La Laja has survived to this day. The dating, foundation of the settlement, house form and surviving structure each highlight different aspects within the same historical theme.

Hiking

Puerto de La Laja is the last navigable point on the Guadiana River. Stage 41 of the Camino Natural del Guadiana initially runs along the left bank of the Guadiana to Puerto de La Laja, then turns east towards El Granado, subsequently returns to the Guadiana and ends in Sanlúcar.

After Puerto de La Laja, Stage 41 reaches an equipped rest area with a viewing platform and impressive views of the river. For personal day planning, the changing route and this designated rest point can be considered two clearly distinct orientation elements.

Landscape

On Stage 41 of the Camino Natural del Guadiana in the Andévalo comarca, the landscape is characterised by Mediterranean scrubland dominated by holm oaks (Quercus ilex) and cork oaks (Quercus suber).

On the Camino Natural Vía Verde del Guadiana, the route passes through a tunnel carved into the rock, approximately 25 m long; the route also includes four bridges and two metal footbridges. The Vía Verde del Guadiana is 16.65 km long and runs from Puerto de La Laja (El Granado) to La Isabel (El Almendro) in Huelva, Andalusia.
