Culture

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Consolación is an Andalusian Gothic-Mudéjar parish church dating from the late 15th century. It is recognised as an Asset of Cultural Interest by the Consejería de Cultura of the Junta de Andalucía. The church has a square floor plan and three naves.

The frescoes in the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Consolación were discovered beneath the whitewash in 1967 and have been restored. They are dated approximately to the period between 1490 and 1530 and classified into the groups Maestro Gótico and Maestro Cuatrocentista de Hinojales. The frescoes include depictions of the empty tomb, the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple, the Last Supper and the Resurrection of Christ, as well as murals of several saints, including Thomas Aquinas, Bartholomew and Catherine.

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Tórtola is a small Baroque-style building. In Hinojales, the ritual Danza de la Virgen de la Tórtola was performed in honour of the patron saint by two groups with an odd number of dancers: nine adult dancers and seven children with palillos. This Danza was associated with the fetching of the Virgin on 30 April, the religious service and municipal procession on 1 May, and the transfer to the hermitage on the last Saturday in May.

Hinojales’ municipal hiking trail network comprises seven named routes: Hinojales-Camino Maragatos, Hinojales-Cueva del Moro, Hinojales-El Cerro Gordo, Hinojales-El Silo-La Corte-Hinojales, Hinojales-La Corte-Abrevaero-Hinojales, Hinojales-Rivera de Hinojales and Hinojales-Sierra el Rey.
