Moguer: Poets’ Houses, Convents and Routes to Doñana

Moguer lies on the banks of the Río Tinto and is connected to Colombia’s history: at the Convento de Santa Clara, Christopher Columbus swore his oath to the Catholic Monarchs.

Culture

The Casa Natal de Juan Ramón Jiménez marks the biographical starting point of this literary trail. The poet was born there on 23 December 1881 and lived in this house until he was four years old. Today, the Casa Natal is home to the Casa Natal de Juan Ramón Jiménez museum. It portrays the Moguer known to Juan Ramón Jiménez and focuses particularly on his family’s wine-growing activities.

The Casa Museo Zenobia-Juan Ramón is a typical Andalusian house built in 1885, with a colourful montera, an indoor cistern and well-maintained courtyards. It was protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) because it was the home of Nobel Prize winner Juan Ramón Jiménez during his childhood and youth. The Casa Museo preserves furniture, paintings, books, manuscripts and other personal belongings of Juan Ramón Jiménez and his wife Zenobia.

The Museo Platero EScultura is an open-air sculpture museum. The works there are inspired by various chapters of Juan Ramón Jiménez’s world-famous work. Biographical interiors and open-air art create different cultural focal points.

The Convento de San Francisco was commissioned at the end of the 15th century and comprises a church and a cloister. The Convento de Santa Clara combines Gothic and Mudéjar styles and was declared a National Monument in 1931. It houses the Diocesan Museum; its most important piece is the Cristo de la Humildad by Martínez Sugrañes, made of English alabaster.

Nature

The Vereda del Camino de Loro connects the area around Moguer with Doñana Natural Park. There it joins the Asperillo cycle path, which connects Mazagón and Matalascañas, as well as the Cuesta Maneli hiking trail.

The linear route to Laguna de las Madres begins in Moguer’s pine forest a few metres from the A-494 road, at kilometre 23. For your own planning, the routes mentioned can be distinguished by type and connection.

Playa El Parador is surrounded by cliffs, pine trees and some eucalyptus trees. The beach is named after the Parador de Mazagón behind it and can be reached on foot from a nearby car park.

Cuisine

Confitería La Victoria offers a quesadilla. The confectionery shop is considered the oldest and has more than a century of tradition.

At the Feria de Época 1900, Moguer brings back to life, from 20 to 22 February, the prosperous and cultured city in which the poet Juan Ramón Jiménez was born and raised; the event is presented as a tourist festival.
