El Granado: Mining Heritage, Windmill and Vía Verde

Culture

The history of mining can be read in concrete places in El Granado. The industrial heritage of La Laja and El Sardón in the municipality of El Granado represents the activities associated with mining—transport, loading and storage—from the end of the 19th century until the second half of the 20th century. In Puerto de La Laja, the loading quay and the town centre are protected as Assets of Cultural Interest under the typology “Place of Industrial Interest”. The original mineral loading quay in Puerto de La Laja has been in operation as such since 1858. The various terms and dates can be read separately: as local history, as labour history and as built heritage.

The traditional mill is also part of the cultural character of the town. The Molino de Viento de La Solana is a traditional windmill in the municipality of El Granado. It was restored in 1996; it demonstrates the operation of historic mills and preserves original elements as well as equipment associated with the work of millers. The Molino has been prepared for visits: its exterior and interior can be visited, with traditional equipment, original parts of the mill and agricultural implements on display. The Feria de Artesanía de El Granado has been held since 2004. It presents handcrafted products, cultural goods and folkloric performances. The mill and the Feria represent different cultural formats that can be considered separately when exploring the town.

Routes

The Vía Verde del Guadiana is a 17 km route with a tunnel and three rest areas. It follows the route of the former mining railway that connected Mina de las Herrerías with Puerto de La Laja. The Vía Verde del Guadiana is accessible on foot, by mountain bike, on horseback and in a wheelchair. For planning purposes, you can consider the route length, rest opportunities and mode of transport as separate points of comparison. This allows the route structure and mode of transport to be considered as two separate planning levels.

Other local destinations that you can access via this page include Puerto de la Laja, Chucena, Corterrangel, Campofrío, Jabuguillo, San Juan Del Puerto, Hinojales and La Palma Del Condado.

For a stay in El Granado, you can consider travel dates, room category and cancellation policy for a holiday apartment as different details. The travel dates refer to the desired period, the room category to the selected type of offer and the cancellation policy to the contractual framework. These three details can be read separately without mixing up the town’s cultural and landscape destinations.

Landscape

The Presa de la Chanza reservoir is located in the municipality of El Granado. In the El Granado area, the Guadiana forms a natural border with Portugal due to its geographical location. For geographical orientation, you can consider these two landscape features separately. El Granado can be reached via the HV-2121.
