Culture and History

The old town of La Palma del Condado is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category Conjunto Histórico-Artístico; it features narrow streets, traditional sections with cobblestones and predominantly whitewashed houses.

The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista was built in 1768 on the ruins of a Mudéjar church destroyed by the Lisbon earthquake and is considered a representative example of late Sevillian Baroque. It has a monumental Baroque portal and a tower clad in tiles arranged in a checkerboard pattern.

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Valle is the oldest surviving building in La Palma del Condado, dates from the 15th century and is considered a model of late medieval architecture in the province of Huelva. It is recognised as a Bien de Interés Cultural and is an outstanding example of Gothic-Mudéjar architecture in the landscape of the province of Huelva.

During the restoration of the Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Valle in 1980, significant fresco and tempera paintings from the 15th and 16th centuries were discovered.

The veneration of the Cruces de Mayo in La Palma del Condado dates back at least to the 19th century. Public crosses are decorated with flowers and wild rosemary and celebrated around 3 May with music and local folklore.

A central moment of Holy Week in La Palma del Condado is the Encuentro de Jesús con su Madre at the corner of the Casa de los Tirado.
