Nature and hiking

The Linares de la Sierra–Alájar hiking trail is linear and measures 3.821 kilometres one way. The one-way journey takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes; the difficulty level is low.

The trail begins on the road to the cemetery of Linares de la Sierra, a few metres beyond the last houses in the town. It passes through dehesas and orchards, which are among the characteristic landscapes of the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche Natural Park.

Festivals and culinary delights

During the patron-saint festivities in honour of San Juan Bautista, a Festival Taurino takes place once a year. San Juan Bautista is celebrated on 24 June, and the patron-saint festival lasts three days.

At the Piñonate festival on Easter Sunday, traditionally made sweets are sampled and drizzled with honey from nearby beehives. In Linares de la Sierra, Piñonate is a fried pastry known locally as “torcías”; traditionally, it is raffled on Easter Sunday morning.

Townscape and culture

In front of the house entrances in Linares de la Sierra are two-coloured paved “Alfombras”, also known as “Llanos”.

The parish church of San Juan Bautista was designed in the 18th century in the Neoclassical style; José Alvarez from Huelva is considered its architect. It was completed in 1843 and is distinguished by its slender tower.

The Plaza de Toros is attached to the church; it is integrated into the town and is used for open-air theatre and other social events.

The Lavadero de Linares de la Sierra forms a hydraulic complex of washing areas, fountains and livestock watering troughs that ends in a circular washing area.

The Fuente Vieja has been used as a washing area since time immemorial and continues to be used today; winding lanes lined with stone walls lead to it, running alongside orchards and enclosures.

The historic ensemble of Linares de la Sierra has significant historical, architectural, urban-planning, landscape, aesthetic and social values. These values justify its designation as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of Conjunto Histórico.
