Culture and history
The Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción has a single-nave layout and side chapels connected by semicircular arches. Its main altarpiece niche contains a depiction of the Immaculate Conception by Pedro de Mena; it is listed in the Catálogo General del Arte Español.
The Parroquia de la Inmaculada Concepción was built over a mosque and features Mudéjar, Renaissance and Baroque styles. The Ermita de la Virgen de la Aurora was built at the beginning of the 19th century. The image of the Virgen de la Aurora is venerated there.
The remains of the former fortress of Alhendín belong to the area’s older history. They were an important setting in the suppression of the first Morisco revolt in 1500. The Aljibe del Cortijo de Miñarro is an Arab hydraulic structure that naturally collects rainwater for use in irrigating the properties.
Traditions and local products
San Marcos is a local tradition in which families and friends go to the countryside on 25 April to practise “cascar el huevo”. The bread associated with this custom is known in Alhendín as “el macarrón”.
The Reverencias are considered a tradition that has existed for more than one hundred years and takes place on Easter Sunday. A depiction of the Resurrection in front of the Ermita de la Virgen de la Aurora is part of this custom. Customs held on fixed dates and an event focused on agriculture and crafts each provide their own temporal and thematic emphasis.
At the XVIII. Feria de Productos Agrícolas y Artesanales in Alhendín, local producers presented fruit, vegetables, cheese and honey from the municipality’s Vega.
