Discover Gójar: Culture, Trails and Holiday Apartments
Gójar combines landscapes of natural value with the character of its buildings and streets.
Culture and History
Casa Grande is one of Gójar’s most representative buildings. Some of its rooms date from the 15th and 16th centuries. Casa Grande includes a palace building from the 19th century, which is considered the largest and best-preserved building.
Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Paz was built in 1503; its bell tower was built in the 18th century. Ermita de las Tres Cruces was constructed in the second half of the 19th century at the former religious festival site where the Stations of the Cross ended.
Casa de la Tercia was where the royal thirds were collected; its origins date back to the 16th century. The Molinos de Vedril and Ampuero date back to the Muslim period. The two mills are currently considered the best-preserved traditional grain mills in Andalusia.
Gójar’s historic Muslim irrigation system comprised the Acequia Alta and the Acequia Baja. Their different periods and functions provide several factual perspectives: architecture, religious history, the system of tax collection, milling traditions and water engineering each represent a separate topic. In this way, the historical perspective extends from individual buildings and their use to the routes through which water and people shaped the town.
Hiking Trails and Routes
Gójar’s other hiking trails include Boca de la Pescá and El Collado del Fraile. Vega de Gójar is a 7.2-kilometre semicircular cultural route. For one kilometre, this route follows the Acequia Real de Ogíjares, and for 300 metres it runs parallel to the Dílar River.
Different length specifications help you compare the trails for your own planning. The municipal Senderismo Gójar sports programme includes a hiking group. The dates had not yet been set, and two routes per month were planned.
Gójar’s planned network of trails comprises four routes. In April 2025, their routes and signage had been approved and were under development. For your own orientation, the route names mentioned, the 7.2-kilometre cultural route and the network’s development status at that time can be considered separately.
Local Character
Baked lamb is considered Gójar’s most typical dish.
