Nature and Trails

Gor is located in the Sierra de Baza Nature Park. This means that different time, distance and activity frameworks are available to you, which can be clearly distinguished when planning your trip.

The linear Minas de la Cruz hiking trail is 1,261 metres long, takes around 20 minutes and has a low level of difficulty. On the section along the forest track, the route is partially accessible by bicycle. It ends at the old Minas de la Cruz mines and at the reconstruction of the mining headframe that once stood there. These details make the route comparable as a compact trail with a historical destination.

A 55.9 km cycling tour runs through the western part of the Sierra de Baza Nature Park and connects the town of Baza with the village of Gor. In the town centre, it ends at the Fuente de los Siete Caños next to the washhouse. Compared with the short hiking route, this tour uses a different scale; its length, course and destination help you compare different day-trip plans.

A picnic with local products is included on the hiking routes of the Granada Geopark. Such an element creates a different emphasis from a route description that is read exclusively in terms of distance and duration. The range therefore extends from an approximate walking time of twenty minutes to the 55.9-kilometre tour; these differences can structure your day planning without limiting the routes to a single type of trip.

This keeps the practical comparison clear, while the decision to choose trails, cycling tours, cultural sites or festival dates can be made according to your own travel plans.

Culture and History

Las Angosturas is an important archaeological site in the municipality of Gor, with Iberian, Byzantine and Arab remains. Las Angosturas is also home to a burial site dated to around 2300 BC, with rich and extensive grave goods.

Gor Castle has three towers and remains of walls. It was the residence of the Duke of Gor, the lord of the village. For the castle, both the form of the structure and its former role as a seat of power are therefore central.

Festivals and Traditions

The patron-saint festivities in honour of San Cayetano in Gor are celebrated from 6 to and including 10 August. The traditional San Blas festival takes place on 3 February and includes a vigil for the saint on the eve, a procession to the Triana neighbourhood and a Holy Mass.

The two dates fall in different seasons; those comparing festival visits by date can contrast the February date with the August period.

The Encierros de Gor are described by the municipality of Gor as one of the oldest bull runs in Spain and are traced back to the year 1622.
