Albolote offers routes for hiking and cycling. The Sierra Elvira is geologically interesting because it features a clearly defined stratigraphic sequence from the Lower Jurassic with numerous fossils.

Nature

The Sierra Elvira is home to the endemic snail Iberus Gualtierianus. Its native woodland includes holm oaks, kermes oaks and Portuguese oaks. Around the Embalse del Cubillas, around 90 migratory bird species have been recorded.

Paths and Activities

The route network comprises seven routes: five begin at Granja La Cartuja, and two at the Embalse del Cubillas. A circular route designed as a mountain-biking route runs through the Sierra Elvira and the municipality of Albolote. Numerous water sports activities are possible at the Embalse del Cubillas, where the Club Náutico Universitario is located.

Culture and History

The Torreón at Collado de los Pinos is a watchtower dating from the 13th century. The Torreón de Albolote is a Nasrid watchtower and is recognized as an Asset of Cultural Interest. The Torreón is also incorporated into several hiking routes.

The Iglesia de la Encarnación is an outstanding example of Granadan Mudéjar architecture. It was built between 1583 and 1597 in place of the earlier church, which itself stood on the site of a former mosque. In 1981, the Iglesia de la Encarnación was declared a national historical-artistic monument.

The Battle of La Higueruela took place on 1 July 1431 in the municipality of Albolote. Albolote is one of the final stops on the Ruta de los Nazaríes, along with Maracena and Granada. The tourist and cultural route dedicated to Francisco Carvajal is a guided route approximately one kilometre long and lasting one and a half hours; it is accompanied by two trained tour guides.

Events

Every year on 19 April, Albolote holds a procession in honour of Cristo de la Salud. The annual Candelaria gathering takes place at the Torreón and at Placeta de la Reina in the Sierra Elvira. The Fiestas Populares de Albolote take place during the first week of August and include gastronomic competitions, music events, children's activities and sports activities.

The Fiesta de la Cerveza is one of the long-established events; it was scheduled to take place from 21 to 23 November at the Metropolitano park-and-ride car park. The Parque Infantil de Tráfico “Albolut” includes around ten replicas of notable Albolote buildings, including the town hall, the church and the market.
