Discover Baúl: Gorges, bridges and historic trails

The Cañones imposibles route follows the Baúl stream through a deeply incised gorge at a natural bottleneck with a spectacular metal bridge. It includes the gorge of the Baúl stream in the settlement of Baúl; along it, geomorphology and fluvial-karstic incision in the landscape are explained.

Nature and trails

The Vía Verde Sierra de Baza also combines several ways of exploring a landscape: it is primarily suggested as a cycling tour, but it can also be travelled on foot, including individual sections. It is considered a moderately difficult route, with a length of 42.1 kilometres and 316 metres of positive elevation gain. The Vía Verde Sierra de Baza follows the former route of the Guadix–Baza railway line; rail service there ended on 31 December 1984. From the former Gor station, it runs via Baúl, Baza and Caniles to El Hijate and is 50 kilometres long. Along the paths of the former railway line at the Puente de El Baúl, you can view the landscape of northeastern Granada and preserved elements of industrial railway heritage.

This places different route characteristics side by side: the 42.1-kilometre Vía Verde, described as moderately difficult, is associated with cycling and walking, while the 50-kilometre line additionally makes the historic sequence of the former railway stations visible. Nature, movement and railway history thus form separate but interconnected perspectives on Baúl.

Culture and history

The Puente de El Baúl is a complex wrought-iron structure designed in the workshops of Alexandre Gustave Eiffel and assembled in 1907. It is also one of the main attractions of the Vía Verde Sierra de Baza.

The Puente del Baúl is currently open to visitors and is an attraction along the green route connecting various historical and natural sites around Baza.

The Castillo de Baúl is a medieval military fortress on Cerro Testigo, southeast of the settlement. Sections of its walls and a rectangular tower remain. The Castillo is in a state of progressive decay, but it preserves important components.

The area designated as a BIC lies between the gorges of Baúl and Valdiquín, next to the railway bridge and the centre of Baúl. Near the town centre, the megalithic necropolis, also designated as a BIC, contains six megalithic tombs.

Historical evidence therefore appears in different forms: a wrought-iron bridge assembled in 1907, the remains of a medieval military fortress and a necropolis with six megalithic tombs located near the town centre. Their different periods and types of object give Baúl’s cultural heritage a clearly structured diversity.

Festivals

The local calendar includes traditional patron-saint festivals in honour of San Isidro Labrador and the Virgen de Fátima. They include regional dances, ribbon races, music, sports and traditional games.
