Gualchos between Coast and Culture – Holiday Apartment
The Sierra de Gualchos-Castell de Ferro is a Natura 2000 site and a Special Conservation Area (ZEC). It encompasses the municipalities of Motril and Gualchos in the province of Granada and was designated as a ZEC by Decree 105/2020 of 28 July 2020.
In Gualchos, nature, historic buildings, the coast, viewpoints, water, hiking and cuisine can be considered as different thematic approaches. This places peaceful discoveries, physical activity, scenic viewpoints, water activities and culinary breaks side by side, without turning any single place into a promise of a comprehensive experience. The order of the days can be adapted to the focus desired at any given time.
Nature
In the wider area around Gualchos lies the Cueva de las Campanas. It is regularly visited by speleologists and others interested in caving.
The immediate surroundings of Gualchos offer their own coastal connections with several named beaches. Playa Rijana beach is located near Gualchos. Playa Castell Del Ferro - Sotillo and Playa Cambriles - Lújar are also nearby. Playa Calahonda beach is located in the area around Gualchos.
La Rijana has clean water suitable for diving and is accessible from the road. The area around Gualchos also includes the Mirador Faro Sacratif and Mirador Morros de la Esparragona viewpoints. The coast can therefore be considered through the different focal points of its named beaches, viewpoints and the waters of La Rijana, with their stated diving opportunity.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Gualchos, travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions are three distinct points of comparison. They help organise your choice in practical terms, while the coast, nature, culture and cuisine form the thematic framework of the trip.
Culture
Fuente de la Mina in Gualchos has eleven water outlets, a livestock watering trough and a washhouse. The washhouse was built in 1855 over an enlarged storage reservoir. Fuente de la Mina is also a rest stop on the PR-A 233 hiking route.
Castillo De Calahonda castle is located in the area around Gualchos. The ruins of Castillo de Castell de Ferro are located nearby. The two places mentioned add different historical points of reference to the cultural connection with the area: a castle and the remains of a fortified castle complex.
The connection between Fuente de la Mina and PR-A 233 links a named structure with a hiking reference, while the two Castillo sites remain independent destinations in the surrounding area. This allows culture and physical activity to be viewed as separate but adjacent themes. Anyone wishing to expand their selection of places can also visit Castell De Ferro.
Cuisine
Traditional boquerones encañaos are sun-dried and then roasted for tapas and migas. In Gualchos, migas con pescado are served with fried anchovies, horse mackerel and sardines.
