Discover Zafarraya: Karst Basin, Trails and Local Culture

Zafarraya lies within the area of the Sierra de Loja protected area, designated as a ZEC. It extends across the municipalities of Loja, Salar, Alhama de Granada and Zafarraya and offers, among other things, opportunities for hiking. Its protected-area status is thus reflected in a landscape that encompasses several municipalities.

Nature and Landscape

The Polje de Zafarraya is a closed karst depression with a flat floor. It extends approximately 10 km from east to west and 3.5 km from north to south. Its roughly ten-kilometre east–west extent and approximately 3.5-kilometre north–south extent give the polje a clearly defined spatial framework.

Water in the Polje de Zafarraya is absorbed by one or more ponors, meaning natural sinkholes. Up to seven bat species occur in the Sierra de Loja ZEC. Thus, within the same landscape, the geological form of the basin, its underground drainage and a specific indication of its wildlife are interconnected.

Trails and Discoveries

The “Paseos por el Llano” route uses a dense network of rural paths that provides access to various areas of El Llano. The Camino de Lucena forms part of the “Paseos por el Llano” circular route. The Pozo de los Muertos can be visited on the way to the Zafarraya cemetery.

Hornazo and Roscos de San Marcos are traditional foods associated with San Marcos. San Marcos on 25 April includes a shared outdoor lunch attended by the residents of Llano. The food and communal meal are connected with the same locally rooted occasion.
