Culture
The Church of Santa María la Coronada is an 18th-century neoclassical and Baroque church built in 1735 on the foundations of the former Ermita de San Roque. It preserves religious images from Gibraltar dating from the 14th century. The ecclesiastical archive of Santa María la Coronada also preserves parish registers from Gibraltar dating from 1556 to 1704. The New Ermita de San Roque was built in 1801 in the neoclassical style.
The Palacio de los Gobernadores houses the Luis Ortega Brú section of the Municipal Museum of San Roque as well as the Municipal Art Gallery. The exhibition on Luis Ortega Brú displays religious and contemporary sculptures, as well as sketches and finished works. At the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo (CAC) de San Roque, paintings are presented in several rooms arranged thematically around the portrait.
The Teatro Juan Luis Galiardo was inaugurated in the summer of 1995. It houses a permanent exhibition on Juan Luis Galiardo's professional career, featuring screenplays, props, costumes and his 2001 Goya award.
History
The bullring of San Roque was inaugurated in 1853 and is one of the oldest arenas in Andalusia; in the province of Cádiz, it is the second oldest. The first performance of the Pase de Muleta is attributed to the Plaza de Armas, where Manuel Ballón “El Africano” is said to have demonstrated it in 1720.
The interior of the bullring of San Roque hosts guided tours, music festivals, as well as other events and performances. The various historical and cultural sites can be viewed in terms of their architectural history, art, theatre and vibrant forms of entertainment.
Events
The Romería de San Roque takes place in the fourth week of April; during it, the image is carried from the Ermita de San Roque to the Pinar del Rey and then back to this place of worship. The Magna del Santo Entierro procession takes place every year on Good Friday and passes through the historic-artistic monument ensemble of San Roque.
San Roque's current cultural offering also includes the Museo CB Radioaficionados, considered unique in Europe.
Landscape
The Mirador Poeta Domingo de Mena, popularly known as “Los Cañones”, offers views of the Rock of Gibraltar, the entire Bay of Algeciras and North Africa.
The 338-hectare Pinar del Rey lies between the municipalities of San Roque and Castellar de la Frontera. In the south there is a recreational area with picnic facilities, suitable for day trips and sports.
Other place names to explore include Sotogrande, Guadiaro, Torreguadiaro and Pueblo Nuevo De Guadiaro.
