Torreguadiaro: Beach, Lagoon and Watchtowers

Playa de Torreguadiaro gives the town a distinct coastal character: it is an approximately 1.5-kilometre-long beach with dark sand and calm water. This setting is complemented by the Laguna de Torreguadiaro, a two-hectare natural area between Puerto Sotogrande and the centre of Torreguadiaro.

Coast

Playa de Torreguadiaro can be reached from Torreguadiaro or Puerto Sotogrande by car or on foot. Water sports equipment is available for hire at Playa de Torreguadiaro. This means that the mode of arrival and water sports can be considered separately when planning your day.

Nature

The Laguna de Torreguadiaro was once an arm of the mouth of the Río Guadiaro and was separated from it over the course of the 20th century by natural and artificial changes. The Laguna has a visitor trail with boardwalks, information panels and a birdwatching station. Several boardwalks around the Laguna de Torreguadiaro provide access for visits and walks through the wetland.

Things to do

History

The Torre quebrada de Guadiaro – also known as Torre caída de Guadiaro and Torre de Punta Mala – is a listed BIC monument.

The Torre Nueva is a 16th-century coastal watchtower. It was built to replace the nearby Torre Caída or Torre Quebrada after the latter was damaged by lightning.

The Torre Nueva was intended to serve as a refuge for shepherds, travellers and woodcutters in the area.

The present-day settlement of Torreguadiaro grew around a settlement of fishermen who came from the coast of Málaga and from the Campo de Gibraltar.

Festivals

On 16 July, Torreguadiaro celebrates the festival of the Virgen del Carmen, Our Lady of Mount Carmel and patron saint of sailors; the festival includes a traditional Sardiná Popular.
