The polo tradition in Sotogrande dates back to 1965: the first polo field in Sotogrande was established at that time. Anyone planning a holiday apartment in Sotogrande can initially understand the town through this clearly recognisable polo perspective. Every year, the Santa María Polo Club hosts the international Mansion 49 Torneo Internacional de Polo.
Polo and local history
The Santa María Polo Club has seven polo fields, four of which are considered “World Class”. Polo can be viewed in Sotogrande as a separate area of interest alongside nature, the coast and water sports. The year, the recurring annual competition and the field classification offer different points of reference for placing it in a chronological and sporting context.
Nature on the Guadiaro
The mouth of the Guadiaro River was designated a nature reserve by the Junta de Andalucía in 1989 and lies in the heart of Sotogrande Costa. Its wetland serves as a resting place for 144 different migratory bird species during their journey. The estuary has two boardwalk routes: one along the Paseo del Parque and another on Calle Jaime el Conquistador towards the marina and Puerto Sotogrande.
The differently named routes help to view the two paths as separate walking options. The nature reserve, wetland and boardwalks represent different ways of experiencing a landscape.
Coast and marina
With 1,382 berths, Puerto Sotogrande is the largest marina in Andalusia. Within the marina lies the 500-metre-long Puerto Sotogrande town beach, with moderate surf. The beach offers water sports equipment rental, accessible access ramps, showers and toilets for people with reduced mobility.
The marina at Puerto Sotogrande has dozens of restaurants serving Mediterranean and international cuisine. At Puerto Sotogrande, visitors can walk between navigable canals, artificial islands and waterfront areas. The port, beach, dining and waterfront paths thus provide different points of reference for planning the day.
Water activities
In Sotogrande, there are opportunities for kayaking along the coast and for diving courses. At Puerto Sotogrande, visitors can also try the sailing school of the Real Club Marítimo Sotogrande (RCMS) and take excursions on the sea or go fishing by sailboat, catamaran or motorboat.
When comparing water activities, it is possible to distinguish between coastal trips, courses, the sailing school, different types of boats and fishing.
