Bolonia – Dune, Beach and Baelo Claudia

Bolonia combines a white sandy coast with a striking dune, varied trails and the Roman city of Baelo Claudia. Playa de Bolonia in Tarifa is set in a particularly scenic natural coastal environment. Directly behind it rises the Duna de Bolonia, a sand dune more than 30 metres high. It is a transgressive dune that continues to move inland and advances towards an ecologically valuable pine forest covered with pine trees and shrubs. When choosing a holiday apartment in Bolonia, the coast, nature trails and Roman culture can therefore be considered as different focal points of the trip.

Coast and Nature

The hiking trail to the Duna de Bolonia runs along coastal lagoons that are typical of the beaches of Tarifa and support significant birdlife. Along its route, it also passes the Baelo Claudia archaeological complex. Cueva del Moro is located on a natural barrier enclosing the Ensenada de Bolonia.

The strong winds at Playa de Bolonia make the beach suitable for windsurfing. Faro Camarinal is another name for the protected Torre del Cabo de Enmedio, which is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest (B.I.C.). The Bolonia–Faro Camarinal hiking trail ends at this lighthouse and offers views of the Strait of Gibraltar and the coasts of Tarifa and Zahara de los Atunes. Across a pine forest, the view from Faro Camarinal also extends far towards the Strait of Gibraltar and the African continent.

Hiking and Cycling

The hiking trail to the Duna de Bolonia is 2.5 kilometres long, has a low level of difficulty and runs from the Ensenada de Bolonia to the Duna de Bolonia as a round trip. The Bolonia–Faro Camarinal hiking trail is 4 kilometres long, also has a low level of difficulty and takes approximately two hours as a round trip. It passes through pine and eucalyptus forests over stabilised sands and clay soils.

The Colada de la Reginosa begins on the outskirts of El Lentiscal in Bolonia and ends in the village of Paloma Baja. It is 6.6 kilometres long and has a low level of difficulty. Its route passes through pine and juniper forests with stands of coastal juniper of high botanical value. In the final section, the remains of a Roman aqueduct can be reached.

The Ruta del Estrecho begins in El Lentiscal next to the beach car park and is a cycling route with a low level of difficulty. It also begins at Bolonia beach via the Colada de la Reginosa. The different route lengths, landscapes and modes of transport allow for a clear comparison between short circular trails, longer connections and a cycling tour.

History and Culture

Baelo Claudia was a Roman city founded in the 2nd century BC on the Ensenada de Bolonia. It is considered the most complete Roman urban complex on the Iberian Peninsula. Its economic prosperity was linked to the fish-processing industry and the production of garum.

The Factorías de salazón are located in the southern district of Baelo Claudia, within the city walls and near the beach. Numerous basins, or salting tanks, can be found there, where fish was preserved in salt. The Teatro de Baelo Claudia was built in the 1st century AD, around the year 60 AD, and was used for theatrical performances.

The Basilica of Baelo Claudia was the most monumental building in the forum and served mainly as a courthouse. The Mercado, also known as the Macellum, had a symmetrical octagonal courtyard with ten shops separated by pillars. The forum is one of the most completely preserved areas of the Iberian Peninsula. Approximately 90 per cent of the Decumanus Maximus has been excavated.

The Temple of Isis at Baelo Claudia is the best-preserved temple of its kind in Hispania. The Termas urbanas preserve a hypocaust, a Roman heating system. The houses of the Domus del Oeste are among the most completely preserved residential remains in Baelo Claudia. At the Museo de Baelo Claudia, the permanent exhibition presents a new perspective on the Roman city adapted to the latest scientific discoveries.
